Online Cheating - When does Flirting Cross the Line?

Author: TW Jackson

?

Online cheating is becoming a bigger problem in relationships and marriages as more and more people become connected via the World Wide Web. Old flames reconnect through popular social networking media and new people from around the world are now just a click away.

Some feel that the anonymity of the Internet makes everything more impersonal. Unfortunately, the same does not hold true for the many families that have been torn apart as the result of online cheating. The numbers are growing at a steady pace and there doesn't seem to be an end in sight.

This brings about a bit of a question and/or moral dilemma if you will. At what point does flirtation cross the line and go from being harmless to cheating on the lover you have at home?

One good rule of thumb is this. If you would not feel comfortable sharing the chat, email, or instant message with your real world partner, it is probably crossing the line. If you think what you are saying and/or doing online would hurt, anger, or make your partner jealous then the odds are that it is crossing that very thin line between flirting and cheating.

Research indicates that as many as 50% of people who are engaging in online affairs have a real world partner. Among these, many are carrying on with more than one online partner. With these kinds of numbers though, what may start out as harmless can quickly become problematic.

The problem is that real marriages are ending and families are being destroyed because of online affairs. It's happening all around the world and this is a problem that is hitting people from different cultures, financial backgrounds, and nationalities. It's not limited to a single demographic.

Some people feel that the Internet allows them to be anonymous and live out their fantasies. The problem is that not everyone distinguishes between fantasy and reality. If your partner consents to what is going on with you and the 'virtual person' on the other side of the Internet connection that is one thing (so long as it is informed consent and the truth is not withheld). If you are doing this without the knowledge of your partner knowing your partner would not approve, that is something else entirely.

The moment you feel the slightest twinge of guilt or start looking over your shoulders to make sure no one else in the room can read the conversation is the moment flirtation has crossed the line and become online cheating.
