How to Help My Obese Child ? Seven Steps to Prevent Childhood ...

Childhood obesity is rising. Today it is estimated that one in three children are aged 2-19 are overweight or obese, or severe. The obesity crisis is estimated to lead to 112,000 deaths per year in the U.S. alone. Incredible as it may seem, because of the dramatic increase in obesity, the current generation have a shorter life expectancy than their parents. The good news is that we prevent children> Obesity.

There are many things you do to a parent to obesity can be prevented in a child. I offer seven simple and easy, what are you doing to prevent obesity in your child or grandchild.

First, you must fully integrated into the program. There are two sets of rules, one for your child and another for parents and adults. One can not expect your children to eat healthy if they do not. One can not expect your child to lead a more active lifestyle ifYou yourself are a couch potato. What you commit to a change of lifestyle, not a fad diet, lose a little weight in a month, only to win again at a later date.
Second, eliminate the junk food. Do not be in your home. Do not take any junk food for snacks when they come. This includes all types of candies, cookies, candy, ice cream and cake. Stay away from chips, cheese doodles and the like. Soda, fruit juice sweetened and verytasty flavored milk drinks should be prohibited. Have plenty of fruit, vegetables and nuts available if treats are needed. This will not be easy. You will be up against all the TV and print advertising. Just the proximity and ease of access to junk food will require a strong will to break the junk food habit. You want to get to the point when your body has a food craving, it is for an apple or pear instead of an ice cream pop or candy bar.

Third, do not use sweets as a reward. How often have children been given a lollipop or other treat at the doctor?s or dentists (!) office? When you want to reward your child for their good behavior let them have an apple or grapes or a hug. Too many times children are given to associate their good behavior with eating sweets.

Fourth, cook at home. Restaurants and particularly fast food restaurants tend to serve large portions high in calories and fat. Cook more vegetables. Most think of vegetables as boiled and bland-something that goes next to a chunk of meat or chicken. Learn to cook tasty vegetable dishes. Not only will the vegetables be healthier for you, but the various spices will benefit you as well.

Fifth, have your children help with the food preparation. Not only will they learn valuable cooking skills but they will come to feel connected to the food that goes on the table. It will be something for them to feel proud of accomplishing.

Sixth, serve smaller portions. Even when you eliminate junk food you still do not want to overeat. Studies have shown that people will eat as much as is put on their plates. If you use smaller plates, the serving will not seem as small to the sight. Avoid second helpings. Again this is a process. It will take time and commitment but your body will learn to be full with less food as you begin to eat less.

Seventh, encourage your child to be active. Limit TV, computer and gaming time. Join in the fun yourself. Take a hike with your child, play tag or hide ?n seek or some organized sport. Take them to a playground where they can hit the swings, monkey bars and other devices. Give your children time to play by themselves. Children are very ingenious in creating their own fun.

If your child is overweight or obese the time to start is now. If your child is not overweight, the time to start this is still now. It is better to not let your child become obese than have to reverse course once it has happened. The list of physical maladies associated with obesity is long and varied; from heart disease and diabetes to sleep apnea and early puberty. The average obese person will spend about $1,500 more each year on medical expenses than people of normal weight. This is a road you do not want to travel.
