Piedmont slips past Newton-Conover in West 2A wrestling final ...

Piedmont High edged Newton-Conover on the seventh criteria after the match was tied 28-28 in the West 2A Region championship on Thursday at Wheatmore High.

Newton-Conover, which finishes at 41-3, defeated High Point Andrews 34-30 in the third round match got seven wins in the final with only one pin by Tyler Benfield over Patrick Helms in the 220-pound match.

Piedmont (37-0) won seven matches also, but recorded two pins.

Piedmont defeated Wheatmore 33-30 to reach the regional final and will host the state 3A championship match on Saturday.

Ian Canrobert, Jonte Parker, Coleman Carter, Franklin Wepner, Addison Klutz and Nathan Reitzel each got wins for the Red Devils in the final.

Newton-Conover won ever match it wrestled against Andrews as all five matches resulting in lost points were by forfeit.

BASKETBALL

Hickory Wolves AAU tryouts set for Saturday

The Hickory Wolves will hold tryouts for its AAU boy?s basketball team on Saturday at Mountain Grove Baptist Church.

The tryouts will be for seventh grade boys and will be held beginning at 9 a.m.

The team is looking for elite players that will play from March through December.

Mountain Grove Baptist is located at 6156 Mountain Grove Road in Hickory.

Cyclones set up tryouts in Newton for Feb. 18

The Carolina Cyclones have scheduled girls? basketball tryouts for Feb. 18 at 11 a.m. at the Newton-Conover Health and Science School gym.

The tryouts are for girls in the ninth grade (ages 15 and 14 and under), and eighth-graders can also attend.

Parents must be present at the tryouts.

LRU?s Culler, Brinkley on All-Academic team

Lenoir-Rhyne University?s Whitley Culler and Whitney Brinkley have both been named to the 2011-12 CoSIDA Capital One Academic All-District III team for NCAA Division II Women?s Basketball. CoSIDA is the College Sports Information Directors of America.

Culler is currently second on the team in scoring at 13.6 points per game to go along with a team-leading 8.2 rebounds per outing.

Culler currently sports a 3.70 grade point average and is majoring in health and exercise science while minoring in psychology.

Brinkley is currently fourth on the team in scoring this season at 6.6 points per game and 4.9 rebounds per outing.

Last year, Brinkley earned SAC All-Freshman team accolades after finishing second on the squad in scoring (9.0 ppg) while shooting a team-best 47.8 percent. Brinkley has a 3.87 grade point average.

GENERAL

Durham will speak at UNC scholarship dinner

Woody Durham, a legendary radio play-by-play broadcaster on North Carolina football and basketball games for 40 years, will speak in Hickory on Feb. 27.

Durham will attend the Foothills Carolina Club?s third annual Tar Heel Tradition scholarship dinner at the Crowne Plaza Hotel.

A pre-dinner reception with Durham is scheduled at 6 p.m. for sponsors. The dinner is at 7:30 p.m.

The event raises funds for local North Carolina students from Burke, Caldwell, Catawba and Alexander counties who have financial needs.

After Durham?s address, a signed copy of Tar Heels head men?s basketball coach Roy Williams? ?Hard Work? book will be given away as a door prize.

There will also be an auction for an autographed basketball signed by members of the 2011-2012 Tar Heels.
