YELLOW JACKETS BOYS WIN REGION CHAMPIONSHIP

BOYS TENNIS

The visiting James Monroe boys tennis entered the doubles portion of Friday?s Region I championship tied 3?3 with the top-seeded Jamestown.
Then, the Yellow Jackets were trailing early in each doubles matches before Nelson King blocked an overhead smash at the net, igniting a rally on all three courts that helped lift JM to a 5?4 victory.
It was the Jackets? the first region title under coach George Christoforatos.
?Nelson was the key to turning the tide with that big play,? he said. ?He blocked that overhead at the net and then let out a huge ?Let?s go!? and that got the whole team going.?
JM (20?1) will host the Region II runner-up in the Group AA quarterfinals on either June 2 or 4.

Visiting Jamestown won two of the three doubles matches to hand top-seeded James Monroe its first loss of the season in the Region I final.
The Yellow Jackets (20?1) will visit the Region II champion in the Group AA quarterfinals on June 2 or 4.

LOUISA 7, POWHATAN 2
Brittany Wratchford went 4-for-4 with two doubles and four RBIs to lead the Louisa softball team to a 7?2 victory over Powhatan in the Jefferson District championship Friday.
Hali Goad was 3-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI, and McKenzie Riner added two hits, two runs scored and an RBI for the Lions (19?3).
Louisa hosts Liberty in the Region II tournament on Tuesday, at 6:30 p.m.

Luis Chipres scored to give Washington & Lee (14?0?1) a win in the Northern Neck District championship?its first in school history?in a game played at Essex.
The Eagles host King William in the Region A tournament on Tuesday.

TRACK & FIELD
NORTHWEST REGION MEET
The Colonial Forge boys track team came in second place in the Northwest Region track meet at Charlottesville on Friday. Mountain View?s girls team was the top area team at the meet, finishing fifth.
The Eagles boys totaled 95 points, coming up behind winner Forest Park (100.5). Stafford was in sixth place with 42 points, followed locally by Mountain (27 points, 10th), North Stafford (22, 13th), Massaponax (12, 16th), Riverbend (10, 17th) and Brooke Point (9, 18th).
Among the day?s standouts Friday were the Eagles? Pete Reed, who won the triple jump with a leap of 46?7, and David Pennesi, who won the 1,600 (4:18), and Stafford?s Ian Macleod (9:31.29) in the 3,200.
The Wildcats girls posted 51 points, well short of eventual winner Battlefield 101.75. Colonial Forge was sixth with 46 points, followed locally by North Stafford (28.25 points, 9th place), Riverbend (21, 10th), Stafford (18, 15th), Masssaponax (12, 16th) and Brooke Point (8, 17th).
Colonial Forge?s Crystal Jones cleared 5?6.25 to win the girls high jump, while Stafford?s Ashley Hinton (10?0) won the pole vault. Mountain View?s Kimberly Ficenec (4:52.07) triumphed in the 1,600.

BOYS LACROSSE
BATTLEFIELD 19, COLONIAL FORGE 6
Jake Maupin scored twice, and Reed Kaucher and Austin Sims each had a a goal and an assist in the Eagles? Northwest Region semifinal loss.
Marcus Boyer also scored and Ian Hayes made 21 saves for Colonial Forge, which finished 16?1.
Ryan Swingle scored nine times for Battlefield (17?1), which hosts North Stafford in Tuesday?s region final.
