Labour MP Denis MacShane resigns after 'gravest' expenses abuse ...

The former Labour minister Denis MacShane resigned from the House of Commons in disgrace last night after the expenses watchdog found that he had falsely claimed thousands of pounds in expenses.

The Member for Rotherham was told that he would be suspended for 12 months but accepted that his parliamentary career was over and stood down, making way for a by-election in his safe Labour constituency.

The Metropolitan Police faced a call to reopen an investigation into Mr MacShane in light of the ?astonishing? findings by MPs, who concluded that he had submitted 19 false invoices ?plainly intended to deceive?
