Enterprise Headlines and Highlights, 2012-07-30

Highlights of enterprise software and solutions news from the past week:

Apple Phanboyz

Apple Phanboyz

  • Apple sales slip as phanboyz wait for a new iPhone.? Apple is still, however, generating almost as much cash as the Obama administration is spending on wasteful programs :)
  • More details emerge about Windows 8 and Microsoft?s strengthening product portfolio.? Will skeuomorphic (iOS, Android) or non-skeuomorphic (Metro/Windows 8) be the future?
  • SAP reports strong results, claims strength in HANA and mobile.? In the Apps space, SAP showed significant growth while Oracle is fading.? SAP becomes Germany?s most valuable company, passing Siemens on the strength of its quarterly results.
  • Google Nexus 7 and Android Jelly Bean 4.1 impress.? Meanwhile, Google faces huge fines in the EU, and Android-based devices are losing a number of legal challenges for patent violations vs Microsoft and Apple.
  • And still ??@larryellison has just one tweet, follows no one on Twitter, and yet has 28,894 followers (up about 1,000 in the past month).? This means that only about 1 out of every 4 Oracle employees (MAX!) follows Larry on Twitter.? Fortunately, so far, they?re not missing much ? :)

This morning, Judge Andreas Voss (?Vo?? in German) of the Mannheim Regional Court, who has already presided over more smartphone-related patent lawsuits than any other judge in the world, announced a ruling in Microsoft?s favor against Google subsidiary Motorola Mobility. Motorola?s Android-based devices have been found to infringe a File Allocation Table (FAT) patent: EP0618540 on a ?common name space for long and short filenames?.

Microsoft won multiple remedies including an injunction (which is not self-executing, but Microsoft can enforce it against a 10 million euro bond), a recall of infringing products from retail, and damages (the amount of which will have to be determined).

?The proliferation of alternative devices?such as smartphones and tablet computers, creates challenges from competing software platforms,? Microsoft said in its 10-K form recently filed with the SEC. ?Users may increasingly turn to these devices to perform functions that would have been performed by personal computers in the past.? Market research firm NPD DisplaySearch expects tablet shipments to exceed laptops by 2016.

Not wanting to be left out of the mobile device party, and unwilling to rely on its hardware partners, Microsoft is jumping in with its own line of Windows 8-based slates called Surface. The problem, however, is that a big part of Microsoft?s revenues come from licensing Windows to hardware manufacturers.

Oracle?s claim of running 20 times faster than Power Systems was overly broad, inferring that Exadata had bested all Power Systems products, IBM had argued in its appeal to the NAD.

However, Oracle characterized its ad as a case study describing the experience of a single customer, and argued the ?sophisticated target audience? would glean that nuance, the NAD said.

The NAD ultimately sided with IBM, finding that ?at least one reasonable interpretation of the challenged advertisement is that all ? or a vast majority ? of Exadata systems consistently perform 20 times faster in all or many respects than all ? or a vast majority ? of IBM Power systems,? it said in a statement. ?The message was not supported by the evidence in the record.?

Nicira, with the OpenFlow networking protocol, is tackling one of the largest remaining problems in virtualizing the data center: giving the enterprise network the same flexibility and moldability as the virtualized servers that it?s attached to. Instead of continuing to load the network with devices already wired with fixed message routes, Nicira advocates putting more programmable intelligence into the network control plane and configuring and reconfiguring devices to dynamic traffic patterns. That?s a nice fit with VMware?s previously announced goal of establishing the software-defined data center.

Hana software, which lets clients process large amounts of data quickly in a computer?s memory by bypassing slower hard drives, is on track to reach its 2012 revenue target after second-quarter sales were 85 million euros. Mobile revenue was 54 million euros, and cloud products generated 69 million euros, SAP said.

Net income advanced to 661 million euros, or 55 cents a share, from 587 million euros, or 49 cents, a year earlier. Analysts predicted 643.7 million euros. Net income, adjusted for some items, increased to 831 million euros from 703 million euros. Revenue rose 18 percent to 3.9 billion euros.

The money is accumulating overseas because corporations are counting on lower U.S. tax rates in the future. At 35 percent, the U.S. corporate tax rate is among the highest for developed countries. In 2004, Congress enacted a one-year ?tax holiday? for overseas earnings, and multinationals are hoping for a repeat of that. Presidential candidate Mitt Romney wants to permanently eliminate federal taxes on overseas profits. President Barack Obama attacked that idea last week, saying it won?t create U.S. jobs, like the Romney campaign contends.

Where Apple does differ from other companies is that it sets aside a portion of these overseas profits, marking them as subject to U.S. taxes sometime in the future. Essentially, it?s saying ?this is money that we?ll likely have to pay U.S. federal income taxes on? because we intend to repatriate it, says Willens.

Whether Google gets labeled a monopolist is largely in the hands of Joaquin Almunia, a former Spanish labor leader and onetime Socialist candidate for prime minister who is the European Union?s top antitrust enforcer.

Almunia has pushed hard for a negotiated settlement in hopes of avoiding a years-long battle of the type that European regulators once waged with Microsoft over its Windows operating system. People closely watching the Google case predict that this week ? the last before a long summer break hobbles operations here ? will produce a deal or a formal ?statement of objections,? essentially an indictment on allegations of monopolistic behavior.

The bias can take several forms, they say. Their salaries might stagnate. They might have few or no opportunities for advancement. They might not be included in training and professional development programs. And they could be the first to be laid off and the last to be hired.

Annual Travel Insurance ? Why this is a Priority for my Adventures ...

Guest Story by Jenny Pilley

Travelling is exciting but at the same time a little scary regardless of where you are going. Robots in Vegas cc Image courtesy of Moyan_Bren on FlickrAlthough I haven?t been as adventurous to back pack around the depths of Australia or the Far East, I have seen quite a few European countries and more recently the bright lights in the city of Las Vegas.

When the flights and the hotels are booked, the next important thing is currency. By the time that?s been bought, what?s left is spent on the essentials; clothes, shoes and sun cream. The last element to be considered on many people?s part is the insurance; yet this should be one of the first priorities.

There are so many people going off on exotic adventures in various parts of the world that are still novice to tourists and contain many unknown areas. Obviously I was going to possibly the most touristy city in the world, but that said; the roads are busy, the streets are crowded and there are many dangers that could still mean I?m left vulnerable.

Vegas - ccImage courtesy of Curtis Gregory Perry on FlickrWith certain countries, the excitement lies in doing something new for the very first time. For me, it was the helicopter flight over the Grand Canyon, taking the Greyhound bus to Los Angeles and enjoying the sites that Hollywood had to offer. These were elements that made my trip out there, and for many, whether this is skiing on the Alps, riding elephants in Kenya or climbing Ben Nevis in Scotland, the danger element that these adventures could provide is half the thrill.

Of course, thinking ahead is a practical solution and having financial security should the worst happen, gives peace of mind that many travellers need; especially those who travel frequently. I try and go away a couple of times a year, even if this just on a city break. Last year it was Barcelona, this year it?s been Amsterdam, but not having this to worry about due to having annual travel insurance makes the whole process of going away less stressful.

It sounds boring, I know, but I think it?s an important aspect that more and more people believe they can do without. Despite the warnings, and the frequent scenarios we hear in the press about accidents occurring whilst on holiday, people do feel it?s worth the risk even though there are many providers that can offer cheap insurance like?Debenhams Annual Travel Insurance (which I use.)

Holidaying and adventures should be fun, but there are dangers that every so often mean you need to turn for help; whether this be for a lost wallet, emergency airline fare, or medical assistance, travel insurance is a necessity, and it doesn?t take up any space in the suitcase!

Space Fish: ISS Aquatic Habitat Delivered By HTV-3

The same kind of dumbass that considers that impulse is impulse, regardless of it's under 0G, 1G, or 42G of gravitational pull.

Which means a fish could indeed, swim in air. In the absence of gravity to hold things down, one could simply flap their arms in the air to propel themselves forward, if slowly.

Likewise, so could a fish flap its fins and propel itself slowly through air, in the ab

Insider trading scandal tarnishes Nomura. CEO resigns.

Insider trading investigation at Japan's biggest investment bank topples CEO. Nomura plans reforms to prevent insider trading after admitting that employees leaked information to clients.?

Watanabe announced his resignation at a press conference Thursday in Tokyo, ending his four year leadership of Nomura Holdings Ltd. Takumi Shibata, the chief operating officer, also resigned.

Watanabe, 59, will from Aug. 1 be replaced by Koji Nagai, the president of Nomura Securities Co., which is part of the Nomura banking empire and at the center of the?insider?scandal.

Japan's financial regulators are investigating Nomura Securities for leaking information to clients ahead of planned securities offerings by energy company Inpex, Mizuho Financial Group and Tokyo Electric Power Co. in 2010.

Nomura has admitted that some its employees were involved in leaking?inside?information and is taking steps to prevent recurrences.

"Our reputation has been badly damaged," said Nagai. "To try to restore trust is easily said, but to actually accomplish that is a huge undertaking. Rather than just change our approach, we need to fundamentally rebuild the company. All corporate employees need to be involved in this," he said.

The scandal at Nomura is the latest blow to the reputation of global banks which are still reeling from the rate fixing scandal that erupted in the U.K. Barclays and other major banks are alleged to have manipulated a global benchmark lending rate to boost profits from their own?trading?of financial products linked to interest rates.

A panel of external lawyers commissioned by Nomura to investigate the three 2010 cases said in a June 29 report that equity sales staff was found to have sought information from colleagues about upcoming offerings that Nomura was underwriting and then pass along tips to customers.

The panel made a series of recommendations to prevent such incidents in the future, including banning conversations with clients about rumors regarding financing transactions and using personal cellphones for business.

Nomura provided an update on a series of preventative steps and "improvement measures" it planned to implement, mostly by the end of August "to restore confidence we have lost in the capital markets." They included reviews of internal controls and rules, employee training to reinforce awareness about?insider?tradingand penalties, and requiring equity sales staff to use mobile phones with a recording function.

Watanabe helped spearhead Nomura's expansion into Asia, engineering the company's purchase of Lehman Brothers' Asian and European assets following its collapse in 2008. Nagai said Nomura would continue to aim to be a global investment bank centered in Asia.

Nomura is reportedly losing underwriting business in wake of the scandal. The company is still being investigated by the Securities and Exchange Surveillance Commission and could face penalties.

Nomura's share price has fallen by more than a third since word of the investigation first surfaced in March, falling from 417 yen to 259 yen. It was up 5.7 percent Thursday on reports of Watanabe's resignation.

'Fairy tale': Is Olympic neutrality really a myth?

Jim Seida / NBC News

Syrians gather in London's Trafalgar Square on Thursday to protest the Assad regime.

By Ian Johnston and Jim Seida, NBC News

LONDON -- As the Olympic torch made its way into London's famous Trafalgar Square, Ammar Masarani stood wrapped in the flag of the Syrian uprising against the murderous regime of President Bashar Assad among a crowd of about 50 other dissidents.

They had waited for almost two hours this moment to highlight the slaughter of more than 10,000 of their countrymen. As the torch went by, they waved their flags, but remained largely silent in order, Masarani said, "to stay within the rules."?

"Most people don't know what's going on in Syria with the Assad regime, so we are out here to raise awareness," Masarani told NBCNews.com.?"I'm from Homs, he [Assad] has destroyed most of my city.?He's destroyed most of the cities, Homs, Daraa, Hama. ?He destroyed them and now he's starting in Damascus and Aleppo."

The Olympic torch is set to makes its grand entrance at tonight's opening ceremony celebration after a 70-day journey and racking up about 8,000 miles throughout its tour. NBC's Michelle Kosinski reports.

Given the scale of the problems in Syria, Thursday night's?flag-waving demonstration might be a small gesture. However, it is the kind of protest that the Olympic organizers seek to avoid, insisting firmly that sports and politics should not mix and that the high ideals of "Olympism" must not be sullied by partisan campaigns.

More coverage of the Syria conflict

But experts who spoke to NBCNews.com accused the International Olympic Committee of picking and choosing what to regard as political while spinning the "fairy tale" of neutrality, suggesting it was time for the movement to acknowledge reality.

The present IOC's?badly handled refusal of the request for a minute's silence?for the victims of the Munich massacre at Friday's Opening Ceremony is perhaps case in point.?Since the 1972 Games, the Olympics has done little to formally commemorate the dead, and relatives and Israeli officials had hoped the 40th anniversary would provide an appropriate opportunity.

Eleven Israeli athletes and coaches were killed by Palestinian gunmen during the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich, Germany.

Instead, IOC President Jacques Rogge and several leading figures in the U.K. held a minute's silence in the Olympic Village on Monday at short notice and without publicizing what they were doing -- after?what Rogge described as a "spontaneous suggestion"?-- but that only seemed to add insult to injury.

Daniel Taub, Israel?s ambassador to the U.K., told NBCNews.com that the Munich massacre was "beyond politics." The Embassy was holding its own minute's silence Friday,?after a last-ditch plea to Rogge by the widows of two of the hostages fell on deaf ears.

"We?re talking about the darkest moment of Olympic history," Taub said.

Toby Melville / Reuters

Sebastian Coe (left), chairman of the London Olympic organising committee, and other officials mark a minute's silence at a ceremony in the Olympic Park in East London on Monday. President of the International Olympic Commission, Jacques Rogge paid tribute to the 11 Israeli team members who were killed at the 1972 Munich Games at a ceremony at the Athletes Village in London on Monday.

?An attack on the Olympic ideals of peace and harmony through friendship and solidarity really requires remembering publicly within the Olympic framework.?I would say that?s not politics, it?s humanity. The fear is that a failure to do that becomes political," he said.

?I would say in a very real way the people calling for a remembrance are really standing up for the true ideals of the Olympic Games, not trying to betray them," he added.

Taub said Israelis were puzzled that ?something that seems to be such a clear violation of Olympic ideals doesn?t seem to be deserving of commemoration.?

Ilana Romano, widow of Yossef Romano, an Olympic boxer killed in 1972, returned to Israel Thursday from England where she made a personal plea to the IOC to relent. She told NBCNews.com that she hoped spectators would stay silent and the media would turn off their microphones for a minute while Rogge speaks at the Opening Ceremony.

'Pandora's Box'
Jules Boykoff, a former U.S. soccer player and an associate professor in Pacific University?s department of politics and government, said the IOC should recognize they are involved in politics and consider setting up a committee or some other formal way of dealing with such issues.

Boykoff, who is in London researching a book about the Games,?said this would open "a kind of Pandora?s Box in terms of the issues they might have to deal with,? but scorned the claim that the Olympics is apolitical.

?The idea that sports and politics don?t mix is a fairy tale that the IOC tells itself to help it sleep better," he said. ?It?s obviously thrumming with politics at every level.?

He said an Olympic political commitee might get decisions wrong,?but at least people would know ?here?s where we [the IOC] are coming from."

More London 2012 coverage from NBCNews.com

There are suggestions that at least some political issues are decided in secret, for example when planning where to put different nations -- perhaps arch-rivals such as Israel and Iran -- in the Olympic Village. (On Monday, Iran announced that its athletes would compete against Israelis in London. The country faced criticism after some competitors withdrew from events against Israelis at the 2004 Athens Games and 2008 Beijing Games.)

"Politics is taken into account when choosing who goes where, but that's based on guidance at International Olympic Committee level, not by [organizers of] London 2012, and it's agreed by each country in advance -- they know who their neighbors are going to be," a senior official involved in operations told NBCNews.com.

"It's about making sure athletes are comfortable in their living space rather than which countries don't get on," the source said. "Even then, it's a not really an issue. You've got to remember that these guys compete alongside each other all the time and all over the world --they know each other, some of them are best man at the other's wedding and so on."?

However, London 2012 organizers LOCOG denied?international diplomacy played any role in the allocation of areas in the athletes' village, saying in an emailed statement?"political issues are not a factor."

From the "Sting-Ray" and the "Pringle" to the massive Olympic stadium that's described as an island, TODAY's Savannah Guthrie takes a look at the venues where more than 9 million spectators will catch a glimpse at the Games.

The Olympic movement does sometimes make open forays outside the world of sport.?The Olympic truce, for example, calls for fighting around the world to stop for the duration of the Games.

But, in case anyone was thinking this might offer hope for countries like Syria,?Boykoff was scathing.?This "really nice idea" was "sort of a farce," he said. "Battles are going to continue across the world, they are not going to stop for the games, as popular as it is."

Flag flaps
Apart from the flag of the Syrian opposition, other flags have been already been causing political controversy at London 2012.

The Games actually began Wednesday with several soccer matches, one involving the North Korean and Colombian women's teams.

North Korea came out to train in Glasgow's Hampden Park stadium, but then walked off the field and refused to return after the South Korean flag was mistakenly used by officials. The game eventually did take place about an hour later with the North Koreans winning 2-0.

On Friday, it emerged that Taiwan's flag had been removed from among a host of others on London's Regent Street over concerns that China would be offended. Taiwan, which China views as a breakaway province, uses the flag of the Chinese Taipei Olympic Committee at the Games, after the IOC ruled it could not use its own flag in the early 1980s.

Fortress London: UK protects Olympics with biggest security plan since WWII

And a marathon runner from new nation South Sudan, Guor Marial, will compete under the Olympic flag, after he understandably turned down the chance to run for Sudan -- which fought a decades-long civil war with the South that ended in the latter's independence. He was unable to run for his own country because it has not yet become a member of the Olympic movement.

But apart from Marial, everyone else will be competing for their country and Alan Bairner, professor of sport and social theory at the U.K.'s Loughborough University and author of a book, "The Politics of the Olympics," said the Opening Ceremony would be "replete with the politics of nationalism."

This runs contrary to the initial desire of the founder of the modern Olympics, Pierre de Coubertin, for athletes to compete as individuals rather than in state teams to avoid overly nationalistic sentiment.

A comment made by GOP candidate Mitt Romney during a Wednesday interview with NBC's Brian Williams led to some tension with UK Prime Minister David Cameron and the Mayor of London as well. NBC's Peter Alexander reports.

?They talk about the world coming together, but the world comes together with national flags and anthems," Bairner said. "Events at Hampden Park ? clearly demonstrated the significance of flags and emblems at supposedly apolitical events ?? particularly if the organizers don?t get it right."

Bairner said only flags of competing nations were allowed to be flown at Olympic events and questioned what would happen if the flag of Scotland ? part of the United Kingdom ? was flown or given to a successful Scottish athlete as they celebrate.

?Scotland has also been racked with concern over the entry of a Team Great Britain in the soccer event. Despite being one country, the U.K. has four international soccer teams -- England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland -- and other countries have questioned whether this is fair. The fear in Scotland particularly was that a Team GB would set a precedent that would lead to the demise of the Scottish national team.

Bairner, a Scot, said the idea was almost unthinkable. "I can't imagine life without Scottish teams in these competitions [the World Cup, European Championships etc]," he said. "For it just to become Team GB, I would lose interest and support Spain or Germany."

He suggested the loss of the Scottish soccer team would provide a "boost" for supporters of independence from the U.K. ahead of a referendum on the issue in 2014.

Millionaire medalists: Will London 2012 remain true to Olympic spirit?

Bairner said the IOC tended to pick and choose what they deemed to be political.

It was possible, he said, that the IOC thought a Munich commemoration at the Opening Ceremony would be viewed as ?pro-Israel.?

But he suggested it was ?just about remembering people who died at an Olympic Games,? and said he thought most people would be "comfortable" with the idea.

Bairner, who said his sympathies tended to be with the Palestinians, said it was difficult to see how anyone could ?object too strongly because they would almost be condoning that kind of activity,? and suggest that Olympic athletes were ?legitimate targets.?

British weather could impact Olympic records

The ad hoc approach to political issues has been going on for years.

A few months before the Beijing Games of 2008, Rogge declared firmly that it was a "sporting, not a political, association," as he dismissed the effect of the resignation of filmmaker Steven Spielberg as artistic consultant over China's support for Sudan amid the Darfur conflict.

And in 1936, Avery Brundage, then head of the American Olympic movement and later an IOC president, opposed a boycott of that year's?Berlin Games in Nazi Germany for the same reason.

The IOC?s decision to go ahead with the 1936 Munich Games -- awarded before the Nazis came to power partly to help shore up Germany's ailing democracy -- had handed Adolf Hitler a "huge propaganda victory,? Bairner said.

?You compare that with 1968 when [athletes] Tommie Smith and John Carlos do the Black Power salute. They are punished by the IOC for bringing politics into sport,"?he said, in perhaps an indication of what might happen to any Syria athletes trying to draw attention to the ongoing bloodshed in their country.

AFP - Getty Images, file

U.S. athletes Tommie Smith (center) and John Carlos (right) raise their gloved fists in the Black Power salute after receiving their Olympic medals on Oct. 17, 1968.

The treatment of Smith and Carlos likely gives an indication of what might happen to any Syrian athletes who attempt to use the Games to protest the killings in their country.

?It seems they [the IOC] decide what is political at any given time ? what they approve of and don't approve of. That?s when they become quite a slippery organization," Bairner said.

NBCNews.com submitted requests for comment from the IOC about the issues raised in this article on Wednesday and Thursday.

Media relations manager Sandrine Tonge said a response would be provided "as soon as we can."

Olympic opener showed music is best of British

LONDON (AP) ? It's not a concert, Danny Boyle stressed. It's about the athletes.

In a very real way, though, the director of the Olympic opening ceremony was wrong.

While sports are the heart of the Olympics, music ? loud, bold, world-conquering British music, amplified in the most global of settings ? was the booming beat Friday night.

One of Boyle's stated aims was to showcase "the best of us" ? and ever since the Beatles and the Rolling Stones appropriated American blues, country and rock and remade them into something new, the best of British has been music.

Music ran like a river through Boyle's "Isles of Wonder" extravaganza, which depicted a Britain brutally wrenched from its rural past by industrialization and upheaval before being thrust into a fast, uncertain, exciting new world ? all propelled by the throb of homegrown music.

It began gently, with Edward Elgar, the hymn "Jerusalem" and "Danny Boy" ? but soon started to rock.

Olympic ceremonies often play it safe. But Boyle, who brought in the electronic duo Underworld as musical directors, gave his show a cheeky edge. The Sex Pistols, once the outrageous face of punk, were included with their song "Pretty Vacant." Boyle even slipped in a few bars of the Pistols' snarling "God Save the Queen" ("the fascist regime") early on ? although he respectfully did it before Queen Elizabeth II herself had entered the stadium.

Fashion designer Wayne Hemingway said including the Pistols was typical of Boyle's "wit and guts."

"Normally it would be brushed over, but the punk spirit which is in Britain was written through the ceremony," he said. "Anyone cynical about this has no lust for life. It's just bloody brilliant."

In parts, it was like a Union Jack jukebox ? a medley of tracks from the Beatles and the Rolling Stones, David Bowie and Queen, the Specials and the Jam, the Stone Roses and Eurythmics, and what seemed like dozens more.

The list spanned generations, from The Who's "My Generation" right up to live performances from two of the hottest homegrown acts of the moment: grime star Dizzee Rascal ? who performed his hit "Bonkers" ? singer Emeli Sande and the band Arctic Monkeys.

The musical melange continued during the athletes parade, with members of the 204 national teams circling the track to everything from "West End Girls" by the Pet Shop Boys and "Rolling in the Deep" by Adele.

The British squad entered to a roar of applause ? and Bowie's anthem-like "Heroes," while Pink Floyd played during the fireworks display.

It was only fitting that a former Beatle, Paul McCartney, closed the show, leading a mass singalong of "Hey Jude."

The amazing thing about the outpouring was how endless it seemed ? a reminder that British music, decade after decade, has retained its genius.

Could any other country have pulled off a similar homegrown aural feast? The United States, certainly. But Boyle reminded Britain how much it has to be proud of ? and the clapping, cheering, singing 60,000-strong crowd loved him for it.

Broadcast to a television audience estimated at 1 billion, it played like an excellent ad for Cool Britannia 2.0.

Singer-songwriter Billy Bragg spoke for many when he tweeted: "Impressive though (the opening ceremony) in Beijing was, they didn't have any great pop music to play, did they?"

And if you haven't heard enough, have no fear ? Universal Music said an album of the ceremony soundtrack would be on sale "within moments" of the ceremony ending.

Mitt Romney: Arab Spring Could've Been Avoided By Bush's 'Freedom Agenda'

In an interview with the right-wing Israeli daily newspaper Israel Hayom, Mitt Romney said that the Arab Spring might never have happened had Bush's "freedom agenda" not been prematurely halted by President Barack Obama.

"President [George W.] Bush urged [deposed Egyptian President] Hosni Mubarak to move toward a more democratic posture, but President Obama abandoned the freedom agenda and we are seeing today a whirlwind of tumult in the Middle East in part because these nations did not embrace the reforms that could have changed the course of their history, in a more peaceful manner," Romney said.

Romney argued that with the rise of democratically elected Islamist governments in some of the countries undergoing revolutions -- Egypt and Tunisia in particular -- the Arab Spring has turned out to be less of a boon for Western interests than it initially appeared.

"Clearly we're disappointed in seeing Tunisia and Morocco elect Islamist governments. We're very concerned in seeing the new leader in Egypt as an Islamist leader. It is our hope to move these nations toward a more modern view of the world and to not present a threat to their neighbors and to the other nations of the world," he said.

The interview, which comes in the lead-up to Romney's arrival in Israel on Saturday, was conducted earlier in the week in Reno, Nev., in keeping with his intention to avoid criticizing a sitting president while traveling overseas. Israel Hayom is owned by Sheldon Adelson, an American citizen who is one of the leading financiers of the Republican Party and a major donor to Romney's campaign.

In his second inaugural address, Bush made an impassioned stand for democratic expression around the world, pledging that "all who live in tyranny and hopelessness can know: the United States will not ignore your oppression, or excuse your oppressors." (That posture sometimes included change by force.) When the Egyptian government cracked down on political dissent, Bush's secretary of state took a hard line and canceled a planned visit.

Romney did not elaborate in the interview whether he believes that Bush's strategy, if it had been seen to fruition, would have resulted in the democratic overthrow of Mubarak's government or the preservation of his administration through internal reforms.

When the Arab Spring began, many advocates of Bush's sweeping foreign policy made an argument different to that advanced by Romney in the interview, asserting that it was Bush's agenda that served as the main impetus for the revolutions, and that Obama had turned his back on that policy.

Japanese men drop inhibition, turn to parasols to beat the heat

TOKYO (Reuters) - It's summer in Japan, which means shaved ice, cold noodles and parasols against the blinding sun - for men.

While women have used sun umbrellas, or "higasa," for centuries, power conservation and increasingly hot summers have sent sales of men's sun umbrellas sharply higher, with department stores across Japan scrambling for stocks.

"There's been a spike in demand for men's sun umbrellas of about three times since last summer," said Mayumi Mio, a spokeswoman at Takashimaya, a major Tokyo department store.

"Most of them buy it for business when they have to step outside of the office to go to a meeting. They feel that it's rude to show up to work or a meeting all sweaty and worn out from the heat."

White, natural skin has long been thought beautiful for Asian women, and Japanese men have also become increasingly skin-conscious in recent years. But the real jump in sales came last summer, after power cuts in the wake of the March 11 disaster prompted new ways to beat the heat.

According to the Environment Ministry, the combination of casual business attire such as short sleeves and no tie, and a sun umbrella, can cut up to 20% of heat stress, providing almost the same impact as walking under the shade cast by trees.

Kazuhiro Miyatake, the fourth generation to own and run the Shinsaibashi-Miyatake umbrella specialty store in the western city of Osaka, feels it's high time that men be able to carry parasols as well, if they want.

"It's your own portable shade you can carry around anywhere," he said.

While women's parasols run to lighter colours - pink, beige, white and red as well as black - those for men are more sombre shades of blue, grey, and green. They also tend to be larger.

Prices can run from as little as 2,000 yen ($25.56) up to 17,000 yen ($220), depending on the design and the materials.

"I believe if there was a 'sun umbrella God', I'm positive it wouldn't discriminate between men and women," said Miyatake, who sells a thousand a year. "If men want to use sun umbrellas, they should be able to without shame."

Japan is currently in the grip of a heat wave that sent temperatures in areas around Tokyo to well over 37 degrees Celsius (99 degrees Fahrenheit) by 1:00 p.m. (0400 GMT) on Friday. ($1 = 78.2400 Japanese yen)

How Social Networking Help New Online Games | Old Mill Hill Society

Over the recent years, online gaming industry has witnessed a steep rise in its popularity. The continued popularity these games enjoy has led to the development of various aspects, notably marketing, connected with these.

There is little doubt that the Internet has become the most popular channel of communication during the last few years and this led to the development of social media websites that enjoy huge popularity as the users are free to share information at any time of the day or night. Marketing professionals foresee these websites as an excellent medium for marketing because the medium is immensely appealing for people of all ages and genders. They believe it?s going to be the medium of future marketing and advertising.

If you thought social media enjoys popularity with buddies at college or workplace, you may be wrong as it?s equally popular with another category of people called online gamers. Game developers are out to make the most of it as new online games get launched everyday by the dozens. Social media websites enable online gamers? network to know the latest trends in the online bingo games and the news here travels at lightening speeds. Of late, online game developers have realized that social media websites prove to be the ideal place for testing of newly developed games. Various game developers introduced new variants of their games to these networks as it offers quite a few advantages.

A very important benefit of launching and thus testing of online games through gaming websites is that the developers are able to get first hand feedback from real time players who are ardently interested in such games and thus provide unbiased opinion about the behavior of game in real time. The kind of feedback provided by the actual users is of immense help to the developers who can make necessary changes, if required, to offer a first class well rounded game to online gamers.

One would also appreciate that developers save a lot of time and expense by introducing previews of games through social media networks. That?s because the number of players patronizing the newly released games on social networking sites is rather limited and thus manageable.

As the game is introduced to a smaller audience, the website hosting the game and the developers of the game can incorporate appropriate changes such as play games win prizes, if need arises, in the interface or layout of the game without spending a lot of time or money, which they would have otherwise spent on rebuilding it on a larger scale.

Coming to the marketing aspect of the game, it will be hard to find someplace better than social media sites for launching a new online game. If the game is new and bright and players are thrilled with the structure of the game, it is very likely that the game gets wide publicity among the social media users before the same is really introduced to general market. Under such circumstances the game stands better chances of becoming an immediate hit on being released to masses, while bringing publicity and the subsequent revenue to its developers and hosts.
