House to miss deadline for cliff deal vote

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The House will miss the midnight Monday deadline lawmakers set for voting to avoid the "fiscal cliff."

House Republicans notified lawmakers that the chamber will vote Monday evening on other bills. They say that will be their only votes of the day.

President Barack Obama and Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell said Monday they are near a deal to avoid wide-ranging tax increases and spending cuts ? the fiscal cliff ? that take effect with the new year.

Both men said they were still bargaining over whether ? and how ? to avoid $109 billion in cuts to defense and domestic programs that take effect on Wednesday.

It remained unclear whether the Senate would vote Monday.

Congress could pass later legislation retroactively blocking the tax hikes and spending cuts.

Spanish police arrest 17 suspected pimps

(AP) ? Spain's Interior Ministry says police have arrested 17 people on suspicion of smuggling Nigerian women into Spain and forcing them into prostitution using threats including claims they would cast Voodoo spells on them if they didn't comply.

An investigation began when police detected in January that around 10 women had been brought into the country illegally using a small boat.

Police said that following an investigation its raids seized computer equipment, mobile phones, false identity and work permit documents, as well as objects which detectives said were allegedly used in "Voodoo rituals."

Officers tracked down the suspected pimps in cities throughout Spain and arrested 16 Nigerian nationals and one Ugandan citizen, a statement released Sunday said. It was not clear when the arrests took place.

U.S. Debt Now over 72% of GDP (We're BROKE FOLKS)

The Congressional Budget Office predicted 10 years ago that the U.S. national debt in 2012 would be approximately 7.4 percent of gross domestic product (GDP), a measurement of the value of a nation?s total output of goods and services.

However, two wars, a recession, economic downturns, and unchecked government spending have changed things significantly. Quite simply, U.S. debt as a percentage of GDP is much, much more than 7.4 percent.

    Here?s the CBO?s 10-year budget forecast from 2002 (courtesy AEI?s James Pethokoukis):

Depressing: The CBOs 2002 Prediction of National Debt as a Share of GD

    And here?s what actually happened:

Depressing: The CBOs 2002 Prediction of National Debt as a Share of GD

?Instead of publicly-held debt as a share of GDP being a microscopic 7.4% this year, it was closer to 74% ? or 72.8% to be specific (as of the August update from the CBO),? Pethokoukis explains.

Yes, our national debt as a share of GDP is approximately 74 percent. This is absolutely unsustainable.

?In 2007 ? the Great Recession is officially dated as starting in December of that year ? the debt-GDP ratio was 37%,? Pethokoukis adds. ?So a doubling of debt due to the Great Slump ? the recession and its slow-growth aftermath.?

Speaking of a ?doubling of debt,? we know we included this clip in another article this morning, but perhaps it?s worth repeating. Here?s Texas congressman Ron Paul explaining how Washington?s failure to address its spending problem has put us down the path of ?no return?:

(AP) ? Chuck Pagano put on his dancing shoes and savored every moment of Sunday's postgame celebration.

He took his customary linebacker stance on the sideline, hands on bended knees. He signaled touchdowns when the Colts scored, patted Deji Karim on the helmet after a 101-yard kickoff return for a game-changing touchdown, and gestured for penalty flags to be thrown.

And after Indianapolis beat AFC South champion Houston 28-16, Pagano even tossed aside the stodgy image of an NFL coach and began jumping around with players, assistant coaches and even team owner Jim Irsay like he was a kid again.

    Why not?

"There was a lot of high-fiving, a lot of dancing, a lot of hugging going on and a lot of celebrating," an emotional Pagano said. "There's a lot to celebrate right now."

    It started with Pagano's return.

He took an indefinite leave Sept. 26 to begin the first of three rounds of chemotherapy for leukemia Sept. 26 and didn't make it back to the sideline until Sunday when the cancer was in complete remission.

When he left the field, he hugged everybody in sight ? assistant coaches, Colts players, even Texans players and coaches ? before moving the postgame party to the locker room, where Irsay presented him with a game ball and they did a do-si-do together.

"What a day, what a day," he said.

    For everyone on the Colts.

"Guys really did not want to lose in his first game back and heading into the playoffs," rookie quarterback Andrew Luck said. "To get a win, I think means the world to him."

Luck, as usual, had a big hand in the victory. He was 14 of 28 for 191 yards with two more touchdowns and no interceptions.

    He wasn't alone, though.

Karim swung the game with the kickoff return just seconds after the Texans took their only lead, and when Luck converted on third-and-23 with the 70-yard TD pass early in the fourth quarter, the crowd was in a frenzy.

The Colts (11-5) will play at Baltimore in the wild-card round next weekend. The slumping Texans (12-4) have lost three of their last four and won't know their AFC seeding until after Denver and New England finish later Sunday.

"We had a great opportunity the last two weeks, but we won't feel sorry for ourselves," Texans coach Gary Kubiak said after giving Pagano a hug and whispering in his ear after the game. "We'll focus on keeping our confidence up, even if we have to play next week."

Indy did everything it needed to Sunday.

The Colts prevented J.J. Watt from getting too close to Luck ? or any closer to Michael Strahan's NFL sacks record (22?). Watt finished with 20?.

"We didn't win, so I could care less about the record. It's about winning," Watt said.

Luck broke Peyton Manning's franchise record for completions by a rookie but fell 15 short of Sam Bradford's NFL mark. Luck also moved into third all-time among rookies with 22 TD passes.

And Indy completed the second greatest turnaround in league history ? winning nine more games than it did in 2011.

"Man, this has been a great year, a storybook ending," Pro Bowl receiver Reggie Wayne said. "Let's keep it going. Hopefully we can continue to write this movie."

It didn't take long for the Colts to assert themselves in this emotional environment ? or to turn the game when the Texans took their only lead. Shayne Graham made a 37-yard field goal with 5:22 left in the third quarter, a lead that lasted all of 12 seconds.

Karim fielded the ensuing kickoff a yard deep in the end zone, found a seam in the middle of the field and never slowed until he reached the opposite end zone to make it 21-16. Pagano patted him on the helmet after the longest kickoff return since the Colts moved to Indy in 1984.

Then, facing third-and-23 from the 30, Luck threw a perfect strike through a narrow opening, hitting Hilton in stride for a 70-yard TD to make it 28-16.

On a day the Texans mostly settled for field goals, that's all the Colts needed.

Luck masterfully led the Colts to a 14-6 halftime lead.

Houston made it 14-13 when Arian Foster broke through a hole for a 13-yard TD run and saluted Pagano by tapping the (hash)Chuckstrong sign hanging on the wall behind the end zone instead of doing his trademark bow. Foster ran 16 times for 96 yards.

Graham's 37-yard field goal gave Houston the lead with 5:22 to go in the third quarter, but Karim's long TD return set off a celebration that didn't end until after Pagano had done his dance.

"It's like a dream come true again," Pagano said. "It's the greatest feeling in the world to be down there."

Schaub finished 24 of 36 for 275 yards with two interceptions and no touchdowns. Foster ran 16 times for 96 yards.

NOTES: Andre Johnson caught 12 passes for 141 yards and became the second player in league history with three seasons of 100 or more catches and 1,500 or more yards. The other: Former Colt Marvin Harrison. ... Manning had 326 completions, Luck finished the season with 339. ... Watt had a shared sack taken away in the first half when the officials erased a sack-fumble of Luck because of the Tuck Rule. ... The Colts lost starting guard Joe Reitz in the first half with a head injury. ... Houston linebacker Daryl Sharpton left the game with a hip injury. Linebacker Tim Dobbins left in the second half with what Kubiak thought was a shoulder injury.

Israel allows building material to enter Gaza

GAZA (Reuters) -- Israel allowed a shipment of gravel for private construction to enter Gaza on Sunday for the first time since Hamas seized control in 2007.

A Palestinian official with knowledge of an Egyptian-brokered ceasefire that ended eight days of fighting last month between Israel and Gaza militants said the move had been expected as part of the deal.

"This is the first time gravel has been allowed into Gaza for the Palestinian private sector since the blockade," said Raed Fattouh, a Palestinian crossings official overseeing the shipment of 20 truckloads of the material.

Israel tightened its blockade on Gaza after Hamas took power five years ago. But under international pressure, Israel began to ease the restrictions in 2010 and has allowed international aid agencies to import construction material.

The gravel was transferred a day after Egypt allowed building material into Gaza through its Rafah crossing, departing from a six-year ban. It was part of a shipment donated by the Gulf Arab state of Qatar, which has pledged $400 million to finance reconstruction.

Gaza economists say nearly 70 percent of the enclave's commercial needs - including building material and fuel - were being met through shipments via Israel and a network of smuggling tunnels running under the Egyptian border.

One Palestinian official said Israeli counterparts had promised "other building items" would be allowed into Gaza in the coming days.

"Israel has promised to ease the blockade more if the truce continues to hold," said the official, who asked not to be identified.

Israeli Vice Prime Minister Silvan Shalom, speaking to reporters in Jerusalem, said more than 300 truckloads of goods have been moving from Israel to the Gaza Strip on a daily basis.

"They can have much more if they would like to," he said.

The United Nations has described Israel's blockade on Gaza as a form of collective punishment, with other rights groups questioning the basis of Israel's security justification for the siege.

In 2012, Israel was forced to release information on a 2008 government study detailing how many calories Palestinians in Gaza would require to avoid malnutrition.

The document said that "in order to maintain the basic fabric of life" in the area, Israel would allow in 106 trucks with food and other essential goods every day. Israeli rights groups say some 400 trucks delivered goods to Gaza before the blockade.

In 2006, Dov Weisglass, an Israeli government adviser, was widely quoted as saying that "the idea is to put the Palestinians on a diet, but not to make them die of hunger."

REAL ESTATE: Foreclosure review filing deadline is Dec. 31 ... - blog

    Posted on | December 29, 2012 | Comments

This is it, the last call.
Borrowers who believe they suffered financial harm because of errors over foreclosure action taken against them in 2009 and 2010 by any one of 27 banks or mortgage servicers have until Monday, Dec. 31, to submit a form to request a free, independent review of what happened.

If the Independent Foreclosure Review shows missteps, compensation or remediation may be awarded to the borrower in the form of a lump-sum payment, suspension or rescission of a foreclosure, a loan modification or loss mitigation help, correction of credit reports and deficiency records.

Payments can range from $500 to $125,000, plus equity, for the most egregious cases.

Since April 2011 when enforcement actions were taken by the Federal Reserve and the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency, the deadline for eligible borrowers to apply for this review was extended from April 30 to Dec. 31 by the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC) and the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System.

The Federal Reserve imposed the extensions to encourage as much participation as possible.

More than 4.4 million people had a foreclosure filing over those two years by one of the 27 firms ? 14 banks and 13 of their subsidiaries ? over the two years. Letters were mailed to alert consumers of potential errors due to such tactics as ?robo-signing.?
Yet, only 5 percent of the potential beneficiaries sought a review before the extension was announced.
Critics claimed the letters were too obscure or too technical for consumers to understand; others accused the federal agencies of flying the Independent Foreclosure Review program under the radar to protect banks.

Even now, the number for filers is slim.
As of Dec. 19, a Federal Reserve spokeswoman said there were 405,262 homeowners or former homeowners across the United States who filed for a review.

As of Sept. 27, only 234,323 requests had been made for a review. Of 769,593 California borrowers who could be affected ? 78,222 in Riverside County and 62,643 in San Bernardino County ? only 42,402 requests had been made.

In the two-county region, only 4,343 requests had been made by Riverside County based borrowers and only 3,661 had been made by San Bernardino County based borrowers as of Sept. 27, according to the OCC.

Rose Mayes, executive director of Riverside Fair Housing Council, said she thinks the low response was due to a lack of awareness on the part of homeowners about the review process and a strong view by homeowners who?d lost their homes to move on.
?A lot of people either didn?t know they might be eligible for those funds, or, went on there way and tried to put that behind them.?
Others say they were afraid their request for a review would preclude them from taking other actions related to their foreclosures.
That?s not so: A servicer is not permitted to require a borrower to sign a waiver of the borrower?s ability to pursue claims against the servicer in order to receive compensation under the Independent Foreclosure Review.

So what?s the take-out from this?
There?s still time to apply for this no-cost review: More information, including how to apply online, is available at http://www.independentforeclosurereview.com

The official Independent Foreclosure Review website has produced a bilingual video detailing the program.

Here are some more particulars on the process, and a link offering answers to frequently asked questions:

Borrowers are eligible for an independent foreclosure review if they meet this criteria:
    1. The property securing the loan was the borrower?s primary residence.
    2. The mortgage was in the foreclosure process ? initiated, pending or completed ? between Jan. 1, 2009 and Dec. 31, 2010.
    3. The mortgage was serviced by any one of the following: America?s Servicing Co., Aurora Loan Services, BAC Home Loans Servicing, Bank of America, Beneficial, Chase, Citibank, CitiFinancial, CitiMortgage, Countrywide, EMC Mortgage Corp., EverBank/EverHome Mortgage, Financial Freedom, GMAC Mortgage, HFC, HSBC, IndyMac Mortgage Services, MetLife Bank, National City Mortgage, PNC Mortgage, Sovereign Bank, SunTrust Mortgage, U.S. Bank, Wachovia Mortgage, Washington Mutual, Wells Fargo Bank, Wilshire Credit Corp.
If you previously filed a complaint with these servicers about foreclosures pending during the review period, you may still seek an independent review of your foreclosure. There are no costs associated with being included in the review; the review is a free program. Beware of anyone who wants payment to assist you in connection with the independent foreclosure review or any other foreclosure assistance program.
Letters were mailed out to potentially eligible borrowers in November and December 2011. If you believe you meet the criteria, but did not get a letter, call 888-952-9105 on Saturday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. (ET) and Monday from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. (ET)

For more information, and the online link to apply for the review, www.IndependentForeclosureReview.com.

Burke Leads No. 2 Michigan Past Central Michigan

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Trey Burke had 22 points and 10 assists as No. 2 Michigan finished its non-conference schedule with a 88-73 victory over Central Michigan on Saturday night.

Michigan played without junior Tim Hardaway Jr. who missed the first game of his career with an ankle injury. That meant the Wolverines started three freshmen ? Nik Stauskas, Glenn Robinson III and Caris LeVert ? along with Burke and Jordan Morgan.

Robinson had 20 points, while Stauskas finished with 19 for Michigan (13-0), which is off to the second-best start in school history. The 1985-86 Wolverines team, led by Gary Grant, Roy Tarpley and Glen Rice, started the season 16-0 on its way to a Big Ten championship.

Central Michigan was hoping to match the success of its football team, which won the Little Caesars Pizza Bowl on Wednesday, but never recovered from falling behind by seven points in the first three minutes. Olivier Mbaigoto led the Chippewas with 14 points.

The Chippewas (7-6) came into the game having won two of their last four meetings with the Wolverines ? in 2002 and 2007 ? but they were quickly overwhelmed by Michigan's offense. Burke scored 14 points in the first nine minutes, and Michigan led 46-29 at the half.

The Wolverines cruised through a second half that was highlighted by Stauskas hitting five straight 3-pointers and Robinson's spectacular dunk in traffic. The only lowlight for Michigan was when McGary came up short on a dunk and fell down, and even that brought laughter from his teammates.

The Wolverines begin Big Ten play Thursday at Northwestern, while Central Michigan plays an exhibition game with Michigan-Dearborn before beginning Mid-American Conference play on Jan. 9 against Bowling Green.

Is Video Marketing Freaking You Out? Don't Worry Read Here For ...

Video marketing can be a great way to introduce your business to the online world.

Learning to make the most of this creative marketing tool takes a little practice and research; begin with the following article.

This article is loaded with helpful tips and tricks to get you started in video marketing. Is Video Marketing Freaking You Out? Don't Worry Read Here For Help!

One of the best pieces of advice about video marketing is to keep it real.

Make a script, rehearse it, and then shoot your video.

That?s all there is to it!

You will end up looking over produced and fake if you do more than that. Real is honest and reliable.

Create video tutorials of your business website.

These tutorials are a great tool because they help guide your viewers around your website. As long as you have a webcam and a computer, you can create video tutorials.

This is a very simple thing that can be really effective in generating more customers.

Avoid letting your video turn into a commercial.

People see commercials all day long on TV and are sick of them, by the time they get to your video. If you plan to sell a product, do it in a fun way which seems more like a personal video than a sales pitch.

Avoid making your video a commercial. If your video looks like an ad or like spam, people will avoid watching it.

People certainly will not share it. A successful video marketing video is interesting, fun to watch, and it provides information that the consumer is interested in learning about.

Tag your video with as many related words as you can.

This will help to increase the amount of people that come across it. To figure out what words you should use you should brainstorm about the many things that your service or product does as well as the type of people that you serve.

Watch other videos offered by your competitors to get ideas on what to include in your video marketing campaign.

For instance, does your competitors include hands on demonstrations or do they mainly approach the videos with a more friendly tone?

Think of your business?s image and try to portray it in each video.

It is important that you maintain a sense of humor and don?t take yourself too seriously.

Keeping your video funny will help people to be able to relate to it.

Making people happy will help them to relate that feeling to your business and more readily trust your products or services.

    Don?t go on too long.

People have short attention spans and you need to capture their interest quickly.

Be direct and keep your sales pitch simple. A good rule of thumb is to keep your message to under a minute when trying to attract new customers.

You can go a little longer for videos targeted at establish customers, but keep those relatively short as well.

Never quickly throw together a title!

It has to include not only SEO keywords you think will bring in the right viewers, but also something catchy so they?ll actually click the link.

What would viewers like yours be looking for?

Try to create a title which is witty and alluring.

Videos make your site more interactive but keep in mind that they are not an ideal solution for your search engine optimization campaign.

You can optimize your videos by choosing descriptive titles filled with keywords and adding a transcript or a summary of the content of the video you want to feature.

Marketing can be challenging, especially for a smaller business with limited capital.

Learn the ropes and get used to seeing yourself on the small screen; you could become the spokesperson for a very successful company!

Keep these tips in mind, get creative in your approach and have fun with it!

Cheers! Snapshots could lead to finer wines

Digital snapshots may make cute holiday memories for all to share, but now a similar technology may soon help create superb Syrahs or marvelous Merlots. Researchers have created a new way to peer inside a grape to identify its composition and variety through computer imaging. This could cut back on laborious chemical analysis for winemakers.

Francisco Jos? Rodr?guez Pulido, a researcher at the University of Seville in Spain, said that the new system could work for both small growers as well as large companies.

"The cultivation of the vine and the production of quality red wines are facing serious problems due to high temperatures and climate change," said Pulido, adding that it makes it difficult for growers to know when to pick. "Usually, there is a gap between the pulp and the seed maturation, particularly in red grapes," which means that the different parts of each grape mature at different speeds, making it tough to pick at the right moment to maximize phenols ? the coveted flavor notes that contribute to taste, color and mouthfeel.

Pulido says that the process takes just a few minutes. A camera snaps a high-resolution picture of the seeds. Then, customized software identifies the seeds in the image and measures their color according to a standardized index of colors.

The close relationship between appearance and chemical composition makes it possible to estimate how mature the seeds are ? which is a good indication of when to pick the grapes. The process was tested and proven in Spanish grapes, but Pulido says that it should work in any type of red or white wine.

Pulido and his colleagues published their research on the new method in the journal Analytica Chimica Acta in November.

Gregory Balint, a professor at the Oregon Wine Research Institute, in Central Point, said that determining grape maturity is a toilsome process, and a digital tool could help ? but he is not convinced that color is the best way to determine ripeness.

"I couldn't see any correlation between basic data like soluble solids, acidity and pH and these colorimetric parameters," he said. "Many winemakers are still using these basic parameters to schedule the best time for harvesting. Moreover, many winemakers and growers are using the sensory evaluation of the berries, including seeds, to assess the maturity levels."

Balint added that winemakers could use something like Pulido's method in conjunction with other tools.

Ripeness means different things for different winemakers, depending on their style and ultimate vision. At Jalama Wines in Lompoc, Calif., winemaker Mark Cargasacchi says he tastes the grapes as well as using chemical tests to analyze acidity and sugar levels ? always looking for a consistent product, which can be tricky. "As hard as we try, Mother Nature always throws us a curveball," he says.

At Adelsheim Vineyards in Newburg, Ore., enologist Tracy Faulds says the picking time is based on flavor. "I think you can make really good wine based on taste, but you can't make one based only on numbers," she said.

The past year saw plenty of controversy over ancient mysteries ? and we're not just talking about Maya prophecies. So what happened to "Franken-saurus," the Gospel of Jesus' Wife and the plan to clone a woolly mammoth?

      2. Unselfish brain cells found in monkeys
      3. Starvation didn't wipe out saber-toothed cats

Faulds said that technology like cold-stabilization, filtration and additives like copper and carbon have enormously improved the winemaking process over the past few decades, and she expects that it will continue to improve wines around the globe. But, she said, technology has its limits: "Winemaking at its core is an agriculture practice, and if you don't have good grapes you're not going to make good wine."

At Fiddlehead winery in Lompoc, Calif., winemaker Kathy Joseph said that focusing only on color, as Pulido's technology does, cannot be the sole basis for assessing ripeness.

"I routinely consider many other very important assessments of ripeness, including berry turgidity [a measure of plumpness], raisining and ripeness variability within the cluster, pH and acid balance as well as projected alcohol balance, vine physiology, skin tannin and stem maturity and perhaps most importantly, taste," said Joseph. "It is that artistic talent of the winemaker that assesses all of those factors as a package to determine the best moment for picking, which also must be in sync with the selected style for that winery."

Iran to move airport after oil found under runway

AFP - Iran plans to relocate an airport in the southwest of the country after discovering oil deposits under its runway, media reported on Saturday.

The National Iranian Oil Company "intends to buy Ahvaz airport due to the existence of oil deposits under the airport's tarmac," the state broadcaster's website quoted Mohammad Rasoulinejad, managing director of the Iranian Airports Company, as saying.

"The government has approved the relocation of the airport," Rasoulinejad said, adding that the new airport will be built 15 kilometres (9 miles) from the city.

He did not give any details about the oil deposits.

Rasoulinejad said that the airport is among "the country's busiest" with some 30 flights per day, adding that relocating it would also enable its much-needed expansion.

The NIOC did not comment on the government's decision.

Prospecting to FSBO Sellers | Thoughts on Real Estate Marketing...

Most homeowners trying to sell by owner really do need your help, they just don?t realize it yet.

At first, they think going the FSBO route will save them money ? and that it will be easy.

You, as a professional real estate agent, know better. But you can?t just insult those FSBO sellers by telling them they have no idea what they?re getting into. If you want to gain their trust ? and their listing ? you need to take a gentler approach.

Start by stopping by to get acquainted. Ask if you could see the house ? and ask if they?d be willing to work with you if you had a potential buyer. Then thank them for talking with you and tell them you have some free information that would be helpful to them, and ask their permission to send it.

See if they?d like the information via postal mail, or if they?d prefer email. If email is the choice, be sure to tell them who to watch for in their? ?from? line.

Then start mailing, and don?t stop with just one or two letters. Trust is a fragile thing, and it takes time to develop. Remember that saving money may not be the homeowner?s only motivation. They may be going FSBO because of a bad experience with an agent who took their listing, then forgot all about them. Their attitude toward agents may be one of negativity.

So get ready to stay in touch until they list, tell you to go away, or actually sell the house themselves. (NAR says that about 10% of homes sold in 2011 were FSBO, so it does happen.)

The For Sale By Owner Letter Set I offer on my prospecting letters page includes two ?give-away? items you can use at different stages in your relationship. The first is a ?Getting Started? report. It gives hints on determining the proper price, gathering the necessary forms, taking safety precautions, etc. The second is the same kind of checklist that you?d give any seller ? things to do to get the house ready for market.

Letters 1 through 10 expand on the items listed in the getting started report. Each letter offers a little advice and perhaps a little warning. For instance, the letter that mentions the title report warns that they need to contact the title company and get this ahead of time, because sometimes unexpected clouds on the title can delay (and kill) a sale.

While the letters do indicate your willingness to help, none of them shouts ?You?re wasting your time, list with me today!? The whole point of the letters is to gain that homeowner?s trust while you show them that you DO know your business. Right now you?re paying attention to them and being helpful ? and that?s a good indication of how you?ll behave should they decide to list with you.

Depending upon the time you have to devote to prospecting for FSBO?s, you can call a day or so after you?ve sent a message ? just to ask if they have any questions. And if you happen to be in their neighborhood with a few minutes time to spare, you can stop in to ask how things are going.

At some point you will probably hear some uncertainty in their voice ? and that might be the time to say ?Would you like me to take over this chore for you??

One thing you shouldn?t do ? and you may disagree with me ? is offer a market analysis before they?ve indicated a willingness to list with you. In fact, if you believe price is the primary reason why their home has not sold, you probably shouldn?t do it until after the listing is signed.

If you have the time and like to write, you can write a FSBO prospecting letter set yourself. If not, my set of 10 letters plus the special report and checklist is only $97.

You can use it as I?ve described, AND you can use it via a capture form on your website. Put it in a sidebar, or write a whole page about selling as a FSBO. Include a little bit of advice, then offer the special report.

You might even title the page something like ?Why FSBO homes sell for less than listed homes.? Then quote the NAR statistics, which say: ?The typical FSBO home sold for $150,000 compared to $215,000 for agent-assisted home sales.? (For this and more statistics from NAR, go here.)

If you do decide to write your own set, do make the time to write all the letters before you start using them. You know how busy life can become when you?re showing homes, listing homes, and working to get transactions to closing. If you put off writing the follow-up letters, chances are that your plans to follow up faithfully could get derailed.

Wishing you success, and dozens of good new listings in 2013!

McNeill tornado relief needs non-perishable items, no more clothes

PICAYUNE, Mississippi -- So many donated clothing items have been received following the Christmas Day tornado in McNeill that a donation center is no longer accepting them.

Instead, organizers are asking donors to give non-perishable food items, toiletries and gift cards, the Picayune Item reports.

Donation coordinators also held a Saturday yard sale at Pearl River Central Elementary School to benefit tornado victims.

The storm destroyed 28 homes along a 24-mile track through Pearl River and Stone counties.

The American Red Cross is still assisting people with insurance claims, but a shelter has been closed.

For those who would like to make a monetary donation, an account for tornado victims has been set up at First National Bank of Picayune under the name of McNeill Tornado Disaster.

California gun sales jump; gun injuries, deaths fall

    Phillip Reese
    Sacramento Bee
    December 29, 2012

Gun deaths and injuries have dropped sharply in California, even as the number of guns sold in the state has risen, according to new state data.

Dealers sold 600,000 guns in California last year, up from 350,000 in 2002, according to records of sale tallied by the California Attorney General?s office.

During that same period, the number of California hospitalizations due to gun injuries declined from about 4,000 annually to 2,800, a roughly 25 percent drop, according to hospital records collected by the California Department of Public Health.

Firearm-related deaths fell from about 3,200 annually to about 2,800, an 11 percent drop, state health figures show.

(AP) ? A passenger airliner careered off the runway at Russia's third-busiest airport and partly onto a highway while landing on Saturday, broke into pieces and caught fire, killing at least four people.

Officials said there were eight people aboard the Tu-204 belonging to Russian airline Red Wings that was flying back from the Czech Republic without passengers to its home at Vnukovo Airport.

Emergency officials said in a televised news conference that four people were killed and another four severely injured when the plane rolled off the runway into a snowy field and partly onto an adjacent highway, then disintegrated. No collisions with vehicles on the major, multilane highway were reported.

The plane's cockpit area was sheared off from the fuselage and the tail section partly torn away.

The crash occurred amid snow and winds gusting up to 15 meters a second (30 mph), but other details were not immediately known. A spokesman for Russia's top investigative agency, Vladimir Markin, said initial indications were that pilot error was the cause.

The state news agency RIA Novosti cited an unidentified official at the Russian Aviation Agency as saying another Red Wings Tu-204 had gone off the runway at the international airport in Novosibirsk in Siberia on Dec. 20. The agency said that incident, in which no one was injured, was due to the failure of the plane's engines to go into reverse upon landing and that its brake system malfunctioned.

On Friday, the Aviation Agency sent a directive to the Tupolev company's president calling for it to take urgent preventive measures.

The plane that crashed Saturday took off from Pardubice airport in the Czech Republic. Jan Anderlik, the director of the company that operates the airport, told Czech public television that the plane underwent a regular technical check before takeoff and no problems were discovered.

Prior to Saturday's crash, there had been no fatal accidents reported for Tu-204s, which entered commercial service in 1995. The plane is a twin-engine midrange jet with a capacity of about 210 passengers.

The Red Wings airline is one of the holdings of Russian billionaire Alexander Lebedev, who also owns the British newspapers The Independent and the Evening Standard.

Vnukovo, on the southern outskirts of Moscow, is one of the Russian capital's three international airports.

    Engadget's CES 2013 Preview: Laptops

With CES looming like an electrically charged storm of news and announcements, it's time for us to give you our best bets on what you'll see come January. During the month of December, we'll bring you a series of CES preview posts, forecasting what you can expect when the news deluge begins. For more of what's to come, check out our hub.

    Engadget's CES 2013 Preview Laptops

It's incredible to think that when CES 2012 kicked off back in January we had only reviewed five Ultrabooks. Yep, five. Enough to count on one hand. Even weirder, we still hadn't seen that many by the time we wrapped our coverage of the show. Sure, a few companies teased ultraportables they planned to release later in the year, but these only represented a slice of the 100-plus models slated to launch in 2012. And that didn't even include all the Ultrabook imposters! Ever hear of Sleekbooks? Ultrathins? Whoever said PCs are dead clearly doesn't have to review them for a living.

Dot Earth Blog: Coal Giant Peabody Drops Claim it is the 'Global Leader in Clean Energy Solutions'

Peabody Energy, the biggest private-sector coal company in the world, has removed the claim that it is ?the global leader in clean energy solutions? from its home page. The two images below show the shift (sometime between Dec. 19 and Dec. 29), with the claim now reading that it the company is ?the global leader in clean coal solutions?:

I?d questioned that clean-energy assertion in a post a few days ago.

As for the new ?clean coal? claims, I encourage you to revisit the statement from my initial post by Vic Svec, a senior vice president at Peabody, and then read what David Hawkins of the Natural Resources Defense Council posted in a comment. Both are reproduced here:

    Vic Svec:

We note on the front page of our website that Peabody Energy is the world?s largest private-sector coal company and a global leader in sustainable mining and clean coal solutions. One of the great untold environmental stories is the enormous progress in clean energy that has occurred in recent decades.

We forget to celebrate the enormous progress that has been made in clean coal in recent decades. The core U.S. coal statistic is this: criteria emissions from coal use in the U.S. have declined a stunning 87% since 1970, during a time when coal use has nearly tripled. ?Smokestacks? for coal plants have now become steam stacks, thanks to wet and dry ESPs, baghouses, low-NOx burners, SCRs, activated carbon injection and a host of other technologies.

In addition, using coal in large centralized plants dramatically reduces the burning of fuel wood and waste that causes enormous indoor air pollution in developing nations. And we know that low-cost coal-fueled electricity has helped to bring about an explosion of electrotechnologies: your coal-fueled mail delivery ? e-mail ? has dramatically lower emissions than traditional mail.

New supercritical coal plants represent another leap forward. Consider the Prairie State Energy Campus, with more than $1 billion in clean coal technologies and criteria emissions some 80% below the existing coal fleet? along with a carbon dioxide emission rate some 40% below existing plants. Prairie State is also a great example of green jobs, with thousands of workers involved in construction of the large coal plant. And Prairie State has a cost of fuel that less than one-third that of even currently suppressed U.S. natural gas prices.

Ironically, U.S. environmentalists have been a major reason more supercritical coal plants haven?t been used in the United States, even taking credit for killing state-of-the-art new coal construction in the past decade. China is building far more such plants because they recognize that coal is essential to power a healthy economy and the new generation of coal plants offer great environmental advantage. Also, Peabody is proud to be the only non-Chinese partner in GreenGen, which just started up in Tianjin, China, as a major coal gasification plant that will ultimately reuse carbon dioxide for enhanced oil recovery.

Coal has been the fastest growing fuel in the world for the past decade, and has been projected to pass oil as the world?s largest energy source next year. Its abundance and low-cost profile make coal essential for powering the world?s best economies and helping to move hundreds of millions of people to cities? and to the middle class. Those are enormous societal benefits, and technology can ensure that his be done in an environmentally friendly way.

    David Hawkins:

Vic?s message is rife with omissions and evasions. His complaint about the untold story of improved emissions from coal plants is ironic, given the parts he chooses to leave untold: that coal producers and coal plant operators fought every single one of the policies that produced these gains; that they continue to fight the policies that could produce similar gains for carbon dioxide if adopted; and that Peabody is truly a world leader in funding the campaigns to block meaningful action against global warming pollution.

Next, he switches the subject from coal to electricity. No environmentalists I know are opposed to electrification. To conflate the benefits of electricity with the need to use coal as it is used today, is deeply dishonest.

Building new supercritical coal plants is a climate protection strategy only in Orwell?s world. Protecting the climate means curbing cumulative emissions. New supercritical coal plants are a massive commitment to increased cumulative emissions. There is no irony in the efforts to block these plants and to steer investments to cleaner forms of electricity resources.

If Peabody were serious about deployment of CCS [carbon dioxide capture and sequestration] it would have supported the Waxman-Markey bill and companion bills in the Senate. Those bills would have made huge subsidies available for CCS and would have set standards requiring its use on the new coal plants that Peabody would like to see built. CCS is not the best tool we have to protect the climate but Vic?s claim that Peabody is a serious promoter of the technology is as misleading as the rest of his message.

    95% The Central Park Five

    All Critics (58) | Top Critics (25) | Fresh (55) | Rotten (3)

Expect your blood pressure to rise during The Central Park Five.

The doc is rife with smart or wrenching or shameful moments. The fresh interviews with the accused, now men, are invaluable.

As grim a portrait of the criminal justice system as can be imagined.

How could this second crime have occurred? The film asks that question but only partly answers it, and in the process it raises an even more troubling one.

"The Central Park Five" is worth seeing, both for the ways it's timeless and for the ways it encapsulates an era.

What's amazing about listening to them speak now, often through tears, is the absence of bitterness.

Puts the crime and the times in sharp perspective.

Burns and company conduct a thorough, riveting investigation that does a far better job of assessing the tragedy than the justice system did two decades before. Of course, hindsight is an advantage we all take for granted.

It's a gripping story that comes in a well-crafted package.

A heartbreaking expose' about a rush to judgment which ruined five, innocent young lives.

Exclusive interviews with former heads of Israel's counter terrorism agency reveal insiders' analysis about the country's policies. Fascinating. Frightening.

"The Central Park Five" is a sobering indictment of racism and vigilante justice, yet it is constrained by a PBS-style deference to the very system it critiques.

You can't help but wonder why this film wasn't made 20 years ago, when it could have saved these men some time behind bars.

What keeps the film from being an impossible downer is the guts and spirit and smart words of the Central Park Five, four of whom, now freed, are interviewed at length.

A miscarriage of justice on this scale would have been tragic had it resulted from an honest mistake - but, as this meticulously researched movie makes clear, honesty had little to do with it.

The [documentary] team builds a solid story from the time of the crime through the release from prison those wrongly accused and railroaded into confessing to a crime they did not commit.

The result is both compelling and infuriating.

The Central Park Five provides background drawn from contemporary media images, including crime scene footage accompanied by a detective's grisly description, as well as reflections by those involved.

Not only gripping and heartbreaking, but terrifying.
