Former player sues DC United over concussion

WASHINGTON (AP) ? A former D.C. United defender has filed a $12 million lawsuit against the team and former coach Thomas Soehn, saying they rushed him back onto the field after the concussion that ultimately ended his career.

Bryan Namoff alleges that he suffered permanent brain damage from a hit he sustained during a game in September 2009. He says team doctors did not evaluate him after the concussion or perform neurocognitive tests and that Soehn decided to play him in a game three days later. That turned out to be the last game of Namoff's career.

He says he has permanent headaches along with memory, sleep and vision problems.

The lawsuit was filed Wednesday in D.C. Superior Court. A D.C. United spokesman says the team has no comment on pending litigation.

Windows 8 will bring out some variety in Toshiba laptop line, with announcements including a ?laptablet? with sliding keyboard, a super wide notebook with a 21:9 aspect ratio, and more Ultrabooks.

Toshiba has shown that it?s prepared for Windows 8 by revealing five launch products. The most revolutionary of these is the Satellite U925t ?laptablet,? which we?ve already had hands-on time with, but the company has also announced four other products.

One is a familiar but unusual sight ? the Satellite U845W. Toshiba?s ultra-wide laptop will be largely the same as before. It will have the same 1792 x 768 display and the same internal hardware. Toshiba claims it makes a particularly good laptop for Windows 8 because of its extra-wide display and large touchpad with Windows 8 gesture support.

This older product is joined by the Satellite U945, a previously announced Ultrabook. It will pack a 14-inch display, low-voltage Intel Core processors and a 32GB solid state drive backed up by a 500GB mechanical unit. Thickness comes in at .78 inches and weight is a bit under four pounds. As with the U845W, the U945 will have full Windows 8 gesture support.

Another new laptop in the pipe is the Satellite P845t. This 14-inch model is not an Ultrabook, but a standard multimedia laptop. As such, it offers a Core i5 processor instead of a slower, low-voltage version. Other features include Windows 8 gesture support, a 750GB hard drive and Harman/Kardon stereo speakers.

Last and least portable is the LX835. This all-in-one computer boasts a 23-inch 1080p touchscreen with full gesture support. It also has an optional TV tuner, Onkyo surround sound speakers, HDMI-In (useful for connecting a console or tablet) and third-generation Intel processors. This new entry will compete head-to-head with HP?s TouchSmart and Lenovo?s IdeaCentre all-in-ones.

All of these new products will be hitting store shelves the day Windows 8 launches ? October 26. Pricing is unannounced.

EPA grants Louisiana 10-day clean gas waiver

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The Obama administration is waiving clean gas requirements in Louisiana to make sure residents have enough supplies as Hurricane Isaac makes its way through the state.

The Environmental Protection Agency says it's lifting some Clean Air Act standards for 10 days. EPA Administrator Lisa Jackson says extreme circumstances are likely to cause a gasoline shortage.

The waiver covers 14 of Louisiana's 64 parishes and includes the cities of New Orleans and Baton Rouge. It lets gas stations sell conventional fuel in addition to the cleaner-burning fuel federal law normally requires.

Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal requested the waiver.

AAA says the national price of gas jumped 5 cents from Tuesday to Wednesday due to Isaac.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) ? The FBI kept a thick file on Penn State football coach Joe Paterno, but it mostly involves threatening letters sent to him and his staff years ago, and there's no mention of his former assistant Jerry Sandusky, who was convicted this year of molesting boys.

Paterno's 868-page file shows he received a series of threatening letters sent in the late 1970s and early '80s from someone who signed them A Bitter Father. The author blames Paterno for family problems that apparently surfaced after his son left the university's heralded football program prematurely.

"I feel you are responsible for me loosing (sic) my son," A Bitter Father writes. "He went to Penn State because of you in the first place. He feels he got a bum deal and I agree. He lost interest in everything and went from bad to worse."

Another anonymous letter, to an assistant coach, suggests Paterno was responsible for the assistant's "tragic accident." The file doesn't say what the accident was.

The FBI posted the late coach's file online Wednesday in response to Freedom of Information Act requests from media outlets. The Washington Times first reported on the contents, which also had been mailed to media outlets a day earlier.

Paterno died in January at age 85, two months after losing his job over the Sandusky sexual-abuse scandal.

An FBI memo dated Dec. 16, 1977, said Paterno found the letters troubling.

The FBI withheld 44 pages of Paterno's file, citing privacy issues and the protection of a confidential source.

The FBI spent several years investigating the written threats sent to Paterno, his staff and even a Penn State television commentator, following leads that took agents to a Roman Catholic church and a shipbuilding company in the Pittsburgh area. The leads apparently went nowhere.

Additionally, Penn State basketball coach Dick Harter received a threatening letter in 1980, the file shows.

A Bitter Father later apologized to Paterno, saying he had spoken to his priest and realized he shouldn't blame others for his troubles. But the letters seem to have continued.

Sandusky, Paterno's longtime defensive coordinator, was convicted in June of sexually abusing 10 boys, some on campus. He awaits sentencing and maintains he's innocent.

Former FBI Director Louis Freeh led a recent Penn State internal investigation into the Sandusky matter, faulting Paterno and other university leaders for putting the university's reputation and football program over the safety of children.

Paterno's family strongly denied he protected Sandusky for fear of bad publicity.

Reading, Writing & Ruminating: On Speaking Truth

Today we remember the martyrdom of St. John the Baptist. Read the Gospel reading for an account.?He died because he preached the truth about Herodias?s adultery and she couldn?t stand it. Yes, he was judgmental. But he called her to repent. She wanted him silenced, and so?used not her own womanly wiles but the charms of her daughter, Salome. You all know the story. Herod is so pleased by the sultry, sexy dance, he offers her anything, and she demands the head of the Baptist at her mother?s request.

Although we have nothing so dramatic today silencing the prophets of today, I notice that those who speak against abortion or gay marriage are labeled bigots. The people who want to sin are intolerant of the people who speak against it, in the name of freedom. Yes, we have free will. But as I tell my children, you are better off when you choose to do the *right* thing. It may be harder to be chaste, but it comes with great blessings. Even married couples are called to be chaste, for example, when a spouse is ill.

Sometimes it can look as though the religious are overly concerned over sexual misdemeanors. I think these are some of the easiest sins to conquer. They form the lower level of Dante?s Inferno.?Much more difficult sins to conquer are the sins of pride. The father of lies ? satan ? lets us believe that we are like God. We should decide what?s good and bad. That?s pride. Much harder to conquer than any habitual sin.

I love the line: Abandon all hope, ye who enter here. It is very perceptive because?hope in the Lord Jesus Christ?is what?saves us.

I came across something wonderful a couple of years ago: Divine Mercy. I?ll direct you to a brief biography of St. Faustina here, but the essence of Divine Mercy is that even if you have a smidgen of goodwill towards God, a speck of hope, God will allow His mercy to work. If the soul rejects this last grace, then God allows eternal separation. In St. Faustina?s Diary: Divine Mercy in My Soul, she describes the interaction of a despairing soul, falling farther into the abyss and how the?Divine Mercy saves this soul. We pray the Chaplet of Divine Mercy often for those who are sick, suffering, and dying.

Our Savior Jesus Christ suffered and died for us. In His name, My God, have mercy.

So, do not despair. Always have hope.

And speaking of hope, did anybody watch the Republican National Convention? I do not watch TV, but this was too good to pass up. So instead of finishing a new chapter, I was glued to the TV with my family for a couple of hours. Oy. I was struck by the humble beginnings of so many of the leaders, their accomplishments, and their drive to succeed. I can?t wait for Mitt Romney to lead this country to prosperity in a prudent manner. He has a balanced budget in MA. Whoa! That alone impresses me. Historically, governors make good presidents, for the simple fact they know how to govern! I especially loved listening to Chris Christie (governor of VA), Nikki Haley (governor of SC, yeah!) and Ann Romney. I waited for Bobby Jindal (governor of LA), but I think he had more pressing matters, like dealing with Isaac.

So, there you go. A post in which I talk about religion and politics. Can you feel the heat?

Syria: Blast near Damascus kills several people

BEIRUT (AP) ? Syria's state news agency says a booby-trapped car has exploded in a Damascus suburb, killing a number of civilians.

SANA says Tuesday's blast in Jaramana targeted a funeral procession for two people who were killed a day earlier in the area.

It says it is the third bombing in Jaramana in the past 24 hours.

SANA says that an explosive device detonated in a car in Jaramana on Monday killed its driver. It says the device was attached to the car by an armed "terrorist" group.

Another car blew up in the area overnight, also killing the driver.

No further details were immediately available. It was not clear whether the targeted funeral procession Tuesday was for those killed in the earlier blasts.

Five miles southeast of the gleaming Capitol dome, on a scenic bluff overlooking the confluence of the Potomac and Anacostia rivers, the future office of the secretary of Homeland Security sits boarded up and abandoned.

Four years ago, U.S. officials announced plans to renovate the dilapidated, castle-like structure ?opened in 1855 as the?Government Hospital for the Insane?? to anchor Washington?s largest construction project since the Pentagon was built 70 years ago.

The goal was to unite on a single campus the 22 agencies that were stitched together to form the Department of Homeland Security after the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.

But the $3.4-billion headquarters project stalled as Congress tried to cut the federal deficit. Lawmakers debated this month whether the nation could afford such a massive home-improvement project, and the House has voted to eliminate the funding in next year?s budget.

As a result, Homeland Security employees remain scattered through more than 35 offices around Washington. Janet Napolitano, their boss, works from a former Navy radar facility that has all the comforts of a barracks. Plus, in traffic, she?s a good 40 minutes from the White House.

?They need to get out of there as soon as possible,? said Tom Ridge, who took over the former Navy compound in early 2003 after he was named the first Homeland Security chief.

In the early rush to get settled, Ridge recalls, one of his assistant secretaries emptied out a broom closet and stuck a desk in it.

?It?s hardly anything anyone can call palatial,? he growled.

DHS holds fast to St. Elizabeths HQ plan?(Federal News Radio):

Funding gaps and construction delays aren?t swaying the Homeland Security Department from its goal of consolidating most of its Washington-based facilities on the campus of the former St. Elizabeth?s hospital.

?The reduction in the funding stream has impacted our original plans,? said DHS chief administrative officer Don Bathurst. Speaking of the future steps in the project, he said, ?We?re going to try to bring those on as quickly as fiscally allowable.?

DHS?s various Washington-area headquarters are spread throughout 50 buildings. Congress has criticized the agency for its lack of integration.

?Bringing the component operation centers together in the DHS operations center will resolve deficiencies in operational management, which was noted in various lessons learned reports and Government Accountability Office reports after Hurricane Katrina,? Bathurst said during a hearing of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Subcommittee on Coast Guard and Maritime Transportation.

Coast Guard vice admiral John Currier and General Services Administration Public Buildings Service commissioner Robert Peck also testified. The Coast Guard is the first division of DHS scheduled to move into the facility.

St. Elizabeth?s Hospital?(Wikipedia):

After several decades in decline, the large campus could not be maintained. In 1987, hospital functions on the eastern campus were transferred from the United States Department of Health and Human Services to the District of Columbia government, with the federal government retaining ownership of the western campus. Several commercial redevelopment opportunities were proposed by the D.C. government and consultants, including relocating the University of the District of Columbia to the campus or developing office and retail space. However, the tremendous cost of bringing the facilities up to code (estimated at $50?$100 million) kept developers away.

With little interest in developing the site privately, the Federal Government stepped in. Control of the western campus?home of the oldest building on the campus, the Center Building?was transferred to the General Services Administration in 2004. The GSA improved security around the campus, shored up roofs, and covered the windows with plywood in an attempt to preserve the campus until a tenant could be found.

After three years of searching for an occupant, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) announced on March 20, 2007 that it would spend approximately US$4.1 billion to move its headquarters and most of its Washington-based offices to a new 4,500,000-square-foot (418,000 m²) facility on the site, beginning with the United States Coast Guard in 2010. DHS, whose operations are scattered around dozens of buildings in the Washington, D.C. area, hopes to consolidate at least 60 of its facilities at St. Elizabeths and to save $64 million per year in rental costs. DHS also hopes to improve employee morale and unity by having a central location from which to operate.

The plans to locate DHS to St. Elizabeths have been met with criticism, however. Historic preservationists argue that the move will destroy dozens of historic buildings located on the campus and that other alternatives should be considered.Community activists have also expressed concern that the planned high-security facility will not interact with the surrounding community and do little to revitalize the economically depressed area.

A ceremonial groundbreaking for the DHS consolidated headquarters took place at St. Elizabeths on September 11, 2009. The event was attended by Senator Joseph Lieberman, DHS Secretary Janet Napolitano, DC Delegate Eleanor Holmes Norton, DC Mayor Adrian Fenty, and acting GSA Administrator Paul Prouty.

Open source software has been on the rise during the economic downturn, because of its agility, flexibility and customization. Now, we arrived at the point when openness is being accepted for cloud computing. Open source was born in an effort to make technology more collaborative, affordable and available to everyone.

I believe that soon the cloud space will embrace open-source software. OpenStack is a successful project founded by NASA and Rackspace. OpenStack is a cloud operating system that controls large pools of compute, storage, and networking resources throughout a datacenter, all managed through a dashboard that gives administrators control while empowering their users to provision resources through a web interface. This would allow anyone to deliver cloud computing services to others.

Open source has severalkey dimensions that contribute to its success:

• Licenses that permit and encourage redistribution, modification, and even forking;
• An architecture that enables programs to be used as components wherever possible, and extended rather than replaced to provide new functionality;
• Low barriers for new users to try the software;
• Low barriers for developers to build new applications and share them with the world.

Now let?s see some of the things to consider when talking about open source being the future of cloud computing:

1. Personal Clouds will replace Personal Computers

Personal computers will be replaced by personal clouds, as people already started to store their images, videos and documents online. The main reasons for this are that people want their documents to be secure and to have them backed up. Information/data stored on personal clouds make it available anytime, anywhere, so people only need an Internet connection and a computing device to access all the documents.

2. Stability, Scalability and Reliability of Open-Source Software

Open-source technologies are preferred because of their stability, scalability and reliability. These technologies are highly customizable, secure, reliable and accountable. When using open-source, the development and support of software can be maintained by developers world wide.

Open-source collaboration tools will be used in the near future by corporations, service providers, VARS, SMBs, researchers and global data centers, which are looking to deploy large-scale cloud deployments for private or public clouds leveraging the support and technology of a global open source community.

Swaziland reinstates teachers fired for going on strike

Swaziland on Wednesday reinstated over 200 teachers fired earlier in August for participating in a six-week long strike.

"The government has decided that all the sacked teachers should report back to work with immediate effect," Deputy Prime Minister Themba Masuku said at a press conference.

A court earlier this month halted the firing of 100 additional teachers.

Most of the sacked teachers were members of the Swaziland National Association of Teachers (SNAT) which called the strikes for a 4.5 percent salary increase.

The teachers abandoned the strike about two weeks ago after King Mswati III -- Africa's last absolute monarch -- ordered the government and the union to go back to the negotiating table.

Protests have grown since last year in the traditionally peaceful kingdom, which is bordered on three sides by South Africa, where trade unions and banned political movements are calling for democratic reforms.

The country's problems are partly blamed on Mswati's extravagant lifestyle, supporting his 13 wives each in her own palace and high-flying international shopping trips, all paid for by state funds.

For diabetics, a steady job is good for your health

ScienceDaily (Aug. 29, 2012) ? If you're diabetic or prone to diabetes, having a steady job appears to be good for your health, and not just because of the insurance coverage.

A new University of Michigan study found that that jobless working-age people with diabetes are less likely to adhere to their oral anti-diabetic medications than diabetics who are employed. Further, people of working age with diabetes are more likely to be unemployed than those who do not have diabetes.

The lack of a clear-cut, cause-and-effect relationship between insurance and medication adherence surprised lead researcher Rajesh Balkrishnan of the U-M College of Pharmacy and School of Public Health.

"Improved use of medications is more than just a facet of having medical insurance. It is linked to bigger issues such as being employed, periods of joblessness or a personal financial strain," said Balkrishnan, who believes that a healthier, active lifestyle and access to medical care resources through employers that want employees to remain productive play a big role in adherence.

Other factors that account for lack of medication adherence include lack of financial resources, stress due to unemployment and lack of access to health care.

Researchers looked at diabetes because it is one of the most commonly present chronic conditions in working-age adults in the United States, Balkrishnan said. And globally, diabetes is the seventh-leading cause of death and the eighth-most costly disease to treat. In 2007, total health care costs for diabetes were estimated at $174 billion.

Policy changes would help, Balkrishnan said.

"Workforce participation for adults with diabetes and other chronic conditions command the attention of public policymakers, particularly when prioritizing resource allocation," he said. "As a starting position, health care providers and systems need standard processes to identify individuals facing financial pressure and their vulnerability to lower medication adherence."

Blunt Christie tells Republicans it's time to face fiscal truth

TAMPA, Florida (Reuters) - New Jersey Governor Chris Christie accused Democrats of refusing to tell Americans the truth about the depth of the country's deep fiscal woes on Tuesday in a pugnacious keynote speech in support of Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney.

Christie delivered the main speech of the evening at the Republican National Convention. The rotund, combative governor drew sustained applause from the thousands of delegates who gathered to formally nominate Romney as their candidate to face Democratic President Barack Obama in the November 6 election.

Christie, a popular surrogate for Romney who had been on his short list of potential vice presidential running mates, had tough words for Obama and other Democrats.

"They believe that the American people don't want to hear the truth about the extent of our fiscal difficulties ... and need to be coddled by big government," Christie said. "They believe the American people are content to live the lie with them."

Christie, known in part for seeking to curb government spending by reducing the influence of teachers' unions in New Jersey, joined other Republicans in calling for an overhaul of federal entitlement programs such as Medicare, the health insurance plan for seniors, that are driving much of America's debt problem.

Democrats have attacked Romney's vice presidential running mate, Paul Ryan, for proposing a plan in the U.S. Congress to change Medicare, the government health insurance plan for seniors, for Americans under age 55 in order to save money.

"Tonight, our duty is to tell the American people the truth," said Christie, whose effectiveness as an economic messenger has been undercut recently by a slumping New Jersey economy that has shed jobs and now has the fourth-highest unemployment rate among U.S. states - which at 9.8 percent tops the national average of 8.3 percent.

"Our problems are big and the solutions will not be painless," Christie said. "We all must share in the sacrifice. Any leader that tells us differently is simply not telling the truth."

Christie suggested that Obama is more interested in being popular than in making tough decisions.

"There's only one thing missing now: leadership. It takes leadership that you don't get from reading a poll," he said. "You see, Mr. President, real leaders don't follow polls. Real leaders change polls." (Editing by David Lindsey and Leslie Adler)

It strengthens the bond between you and leads to a strong, trusting relationship. Walk to strengthen your bond and your bodies! It also helps build trust ? If you have a timid or fearful pet, regular walks can help your pet to build confidence and trust. You will likely be exposing your pet to other humans and animals alike, and with you there for comfort your pet can learn to be comfortable around them.

More pet owners are turning to treadmills to make sure their dogs get exercise.

LOS ANGELES ? Like any true celebrity, Uggie, the Jack Russell terrier from ?The Artist? and ?Water for Elephants,? puts in his time on the treadmill.

At 10, Uggie doesn?t do a heavy workout, just a light trot and walking, said owner-trainer Omar Von Muller of Los Angeles. But Von Muller bought Uggie a DogPacer for those times when he can?t go out because of weather, work or paparazzi.

?It?s important to keep him in shape,? Von Muller said. ?If they don?t get their exercise, they get old too fast, just like people.?

Some 3 million dogs across the country were using treadmills in 2010, according to a survey of pet owners by the American Pet Products Association. The group asked about treadmills for the first time in its 2011/2012 survey because the machines were selling so briskly, APPA President Bob Vetere said.

It may look like the dog is going nowhere. But pet owners with fat, old or misbehaving dogs say they measure the benefits of canine treadmills in pounds, years and sleep.

Heather Chau borrowed a DogPacer when her rescue dog Heidi arrived weighing 115 pounds. Heidi is now down to 80 pounds, and Chau, a Las Vegas bookkeeper, was so impressed, she returned the donated DogPacer and bought her own.

Now all four of her dogs use the treadmill. Chau explains that she can?t walk four dogs at a time, and summer in Las Vegas heats up early and winds down late.

?I want to make sure the rest of their lives are the healthiest we can make them. If the treadmill promotes a longer life, then it?s easy to do it each day. Whatever they have been through is in the past. Whatever we can do now to help them lead a healthier, better life is worth it,? Chau said.

Treadmills come in a range of sizes and prices.

At LA Dog Works in Los Angeles, owner Andrew Rosenthal has a DogPacer, one of the newest and least expensive on the market at $499, that his Alsatian German shepherd Josh likes to use.

Rosenthal?s 24-hour dog care center, which includes boarding, grooming, training, daycare, hydrotherapy, massage therapy and a retail store, also uses a $3,000 Jog A Dog and a $40,000 underwater treadmill.

The most visible difference between a human treadmill and a canine treadmill is the size, because a dog?s stride is longer and his body shorter than a human?s, said David Ezra, the owner of Las Vegas-based DogPacer. DogPacer plans to release a treadmill for toy dogs in September and the price will be smaller too, Ezra said.

The Pooch Hotel in Los Angeles, owned by Petco Animal Supplies Inc., offers a treadmill to help keep pets in shape. About half the dog population has some kind of weight problem, so it was a no-brainer, said Jason Michal, who runs the hotels as Petco?s vice president of pet services and hospitality.

For home use, Pennsylvania-based GoPet has canine treadmills and a treadwheel, which looks like a giant hamster wheel, for small to large breeds, ranging from $475 to $1,225.

Dog trainer April Suhr of Las Vegas believes shelters across the country could make animals more adoptable if the animals used treadmills just two or three days a week.

It?s easy for a dog in a shelter to go cage crazy, she said. ?They pace. They don?t focus. They bark. They won?t eat. They won?t make eye contact.?

The answer is exercise, she said. ?It?s why the gym is so good for us when we are stressed out. It puts our endorphins to good use.?

Suhr, who volunteers at Adopt a Rescue Pet and has her own business, 4 Pawz On The Floor, also works part-time in a pet superstore. She brought a rescue dog, Max, to the store every week to use the machine.

?Not only did he calm down, but he was using the treadmill one day when a woman came in, saw him, fell in love with him and adopted him,? she said.

Suhr has one at her home for her three pets and her foster dogs. Suhr figures she would have to run miles and miles and spend hours and hours to get all her dogs as much exercise as they get on the treadmill in minutes.

Marie Czarnecki, 73, of Las Vegas is having her left knee replaced in a few weeks and will be out of commission for a few months.

She ordered a DogPacer the first day she saw one at her trainer?s office. Her shelties, Dee Dee, 6, and Sundance, 3, have been using it for several months. She calls it the best thing in her garage besides her car.

?Now I take them out with a leash, they get on, I set it and they go twice a day for 10 minutes,? she said. ?They run over a mile a day and they do like it.?

Samsung takes wraps off of Windows 8 desktop PCs | Technology ...

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - Samsung will offer three different choices to people interested in buying a desktop computer equipped with a redesigned version of Windows going on sale this fall.

The personal computers previewed Tuesday by Samsung at a technology conference in Germany provided one of the first glimpses at the Windows 8 machines scheduled to hit the market on Oct. 26.

Windows 8's release has been widely anticipated because it's Microsoft's most dramatic overhaul of the operating system in at least 17 years. It's also coming out at a time when PC sales have been slowing as more people rely on smartphones and tablets to surf the Web.

Microsoft Corp. reprogrammed Windows 8 so it looks and works more like the touch-based systems on mobile devices. The three new Windows 8 desktops from Samsung will come with a high-definition touch display.

Several other major PC makers are expected to unveil their Windows 8 product lines in the upcoming weeks.

Samsung Electronics Co.'s Windows 8 computers for the desktop will have suggested prices of $749, $1,099 and $1,699 - depending on the size of the storage drive, the amount of system memory and the size of display screen.

All three models will run on Intel Corp. processors.

Windows 8 can be controlled by swiping the applications on the display screen or by using a keyboard or computer mouse.

The touch controls will be available through a mosaic of tiles to show applications and services that can be continuously connected to the Internet.

When relying on a keyboard, users will usually switch to a part of the operating system that looks much like earlier versions of Windows. However, Microsoft left out the familiar "start" button typically found in the bottom left corner of the display screen.

In an effort to minimize the potential frustration caused by Windows 8's new look, Samsung built its own optional start button that be used to pull up a menu of applications. This feature won't be found on all Windows 8 PCs and laptops from other manufacturers.

Samsung is expected to introduce its Windows 8 line of laptop computers later this week.

boomerang-employees-eligible-for-rehire - Blogging4Jobs

I wanted to revisit the subject of hiring boomerang employees. In my post How to Hire Backwards with Boomerang Employees I talked about the positives of hiring former employees and how many companies today are realizing that they may be a very good deal. They are a cheaper hire, they are more quickly productive and they have had the benefit of some other experience that may be of value to the organization.

Not All ?Boomerang? Hires Return with Equal Ease

Not everyone is suited to be a boomerang employee. You certainly don?t want to rehire someone who left under these circumstances:

• They could not get along with management (unless management was at fault and they are no longer with the company)

Remember just because someone used to work for you does not automatically make them the best candidate. You still need to evaluate them given the current set of circumstances and judge them against other candidates, but they certainly will have many positives in their favor.

Is There a Type of Position that is Better for a ?Boomerang? Employee?

In the comment section for the last post Tracy asked ?Many in the restaurant and hospitality industry shy away from rehires due to LOWER retention rates of the boomerang employee. I wonder is it a difference in the industry or maybe having to do with exempt and non-exempt (hourly) positions. Any insights?? I can?t see why the industry would matter, but I do think that the exempt versus nonexempt status may make a difference, especially in an industry like the restaurant business. Hourly employees often leave jobs for things like more money or a bad boss, not to say that exempt employees don?t, but a salaried exempt employee may be more likely to leave for a challenge, or a chance to be an entrepreneur, or a physical move. In the hourly employee the reason for the dissatisfaction they had before may not have changed and thus bring them back is not going to offer anything different. As a result they may be just as likely to leave in the future.

Going off for a new challenge or a chance to start a business or to move to another locale my produce a ?brown grass? situation, where that new situation was not as ?green? as they thought it was going to be. That employee may be less likely to go off in the future because they took their shot and had a dose of reality. They come back to the company with a different outlook and perhaps some good experience to offer. The fact that they come back is a signal to others that the company is much better than they thought and may increase retention of other employees who might have had similar inclinations.

There appear to be more positives than negatives

Looking at various posts and articles on boomerang employees there appear to be more positives to hiring back than there are negatives. Here are some of those posts for you to read:

You can measure how you are doing with boomerangs with the following formula:

Rehires as a percentage of total external hires.

Rehires / External Hires * 100

The quality of boomerangs and those ex-employees who are eligible for re-hire will be gauged on following their performance evaluations. Follow these if you want to make your case for catching the boomerangs.
